Annual Maintenance Day 2024

Join Seattle 4 Rotary members, family, and friends to spruce up the club by cleaning inside and out. Bring your favorite tools and spend three hours of fun and service at your Rotary Boys & Girls Club.

This event is held with the RBGC Advisory Board and is a great opportunity for the Rotarians and board members to get to know each other!

Take Charge!  Recycle Lithium-Ion batteries responsibly.

Seattle Rotary is teaming with our District 5030 Environmental/Sustainability Committee to collect rechargeable items (= cell phones, laptops, tablets, electric toothbrushes, wireless headphones, and power tool batteries, etc) at donation sites across the Greater Seattle area on April 20th.  

Seattle #4 Rotarians are invited to VOLUNTEER for a two hour shift and/or RECYCLE their rechargable electronics at Goodwill's Donation Center at 1400 South Lane Street in Seattle.

Join us for this light impact service opportunity packing no-cook food bags for the food insecure in downtown Seattle. This volunteer opportunity is in conjunction with our Community Impact Grant and its recipients, Pike Place Market Foundation.

What is YPE?

YPE is a Rotary Club program designed for young professionals ages 25 – 35.  The purpose is to build a new generation of Rotarian global leaders with global perspectives and experience.  Another purpose is to build goodwill and peace between nations and clubs by building personal and professional relationships between young professionals in other countries. This leads to mutual understanding of  different cultures on both a business and personal level.   It is an exciting new program for Rotary, relevant and interesting to a younger membership!

How does it work?

For a period of 8 – 10 days, you will be part of a small group of other young professionals and will travel to Japan, where you will be hosted by a Rotary club.  You will stay in a Japanese home of a Rotarian club member who has volunteered to host you.  During your time in Japan, you will take part in various activities as a group (in 2019 and 2023, it was a group of 4).  In 2024 it will, take place in Osaka from either September 13 or 20.   These activities are not only professional but also social/cultural and Rotary based.  You will visit companies selected by the host Rotary Club and have a chance to interact with employees at your peer-level as well as higher level, and experience the Japanese corporate culture, how they make decisions, how they interact together, and what they focus on to make their success.  You will also spend time in Rotary/Rotaract activities and social cultural activities.

Similarly, there is a group of young professionals from Japan who will visit the Seattle area, hosted by 5 Rotary Clubs in the Seattle area who are hosting the same activities. In 2024, that will happen  August 10 - 18.  As part of this program, you will be spending some time together with them here in the Seattle area, during some of the group activities.  In Japan, you will have a chance to meet these same young professionals during your stay in Osaka. The program includes some time for sightseeing and unscheduled blocks of time.

How much does it cost?

While in Osaka, the home-stay is hosted by the Rotary Club there, as are most of the meals.  You will have some expenses for train and subway travel in and around Osaka.  The Rotary subsidy is 50% of the airfare and optional JR Rail Pass, and 100% reimbursement for Travel Insurance (medical). 

Who should participate?

Anybody roughly aged 25-35 who embodies the spirit of Rotary and wants to expand their minds and careers, meet new people both professionally and privately, and be open to learn some of the very different cultures of Japan.  You should also be open to helping us make this program better for future participants by giving feedback, recommendations, ideas and a little of your time.  You might even be asked to help us organize future exchanges as we grow and expand this program to more clubs in more countries!

At the heart of Rotary is a business foundation.  Part of this program is business training, career and skills development. This special meeting is being called to provide club membership with an opportunity to hear about and discuss (in small table-talk sessions) the Future Vision Task Force report. This report is the result of several months of task force work to envision what the Rotary Club of Seattle of the future could look like. We would like to see full member participation! Join us for an inspiring evening with Native American photographer and educator Matika Wilbur. Matika traveled around the country to photograph members of all then-562 federally recognized US tribes. She will share her prensentation Changing the Way We See Native America: Dismantling Native American Stereotypes. Catering will be provided by Off the Rez Food truck and Catering Company. Thank you for supporting Wellspring Family Services and families in our community. This fair will be focused on celebrating families, and will offer items and services to help families regain housing stability.

Please note that all volunteers must be signed up for a specific role and shift prior to June 3rd. We will not be able to accommodate any additional volunteers after this date. Some roles may require background checks. The fair will be held inside and outside, so please dress appropriately for the weather, and wear comfortable shoes. You are also welcome to bring water, beverages, and snacks to stay comfortable and safe during your shift.

When you arrive for your volunteer shift, please check in with Thom. If you have a Wellspring shirt, please wear it. If not, please let us know your size and we will provide one. If this is your first time volunteering with Wellspring, you will need to complete an application. Some volunteer roles may require a background check or additional training.

General

Set up – 8 volunteers

Volunteers will assist in setting up tables and resources prior to the event start, to organize the space for a successful Family Resource Fair. Once set up is complete, volunteers will take over another volunteer role. Morning shift only.

Greeter – 4 volunteers

Paired with a Wellspring staff member to stand at fair entrance and greet families as they arrive. You may be distributing wrist bands or utilizing a clicker to count attendees.

Crossing Guard – 2 volunteers

Volunteer will assist attendees in safely crossing the street from parking area to fair area.

Food Service – 2 volunteers

Volunteer will serve food and coffee to visiting families.

Floating – 2 volunteers

As a floating volunteer, your main role will be to provide additional support to various areas of the event as they get busy. If there are no areas in immediate need of support, you will be assisting in restocking books, clothing, and other supplies for future Wellspring orders.

Clean Up – 6 volunteers

Assist Wellspring staff in cleaning up tables, resources, and materials after the event. You may be asked to break down tents, tables and chairs, dispose of trash, and organize supplies. Afternoon shift only.

Family Store

Diaper Resource Assistants – 2 volunteers

Volunteers will assist Family Store staff in distributing diapers, hygiene items, and other Family Store resources directly to families attending the fair. Will also assist in gathering additional supplies from inside the Wellspring building and replenishing the tables outside.

Requirements: Language skills preferred (particularly Spanish, Somali, Amharic, and Tigrinya).

Family Store Resource Assistants – 2 volunteers

Volunteers will distribute children’s books, or other items to interested families and other Family Store resources. Volunteers may need to gather additional books from inside the Wellspring building and replenish books as needed.

Housing

Assistant Extraordinaire – 2 volunteers

Volunteers will assist Housing staff in copying client documents, and communicating with attendees waiting in line. Support case managers in distribution of resources. Requirements: background check and additional training may be necessary.

Early Learning Center

Art Table Chaperones – 2 volunteers

Volunteers will support Early Learning Center staff in activities to entertain children attending the Family Resource Fair with their families. This may include supervising play with toys, or supporting the Arts and Crafts table.

A world-renowned scientist and recipient of the National Medal of Science in 2011, Dr. Leroy Hood co-founded the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) in 2000, served as its first President from 2000-2017 and is a Professor and Chief Strategy Officer. In 2016, ISB affiliated with Providence where Dr. Hood now serves as Emeritus Science Advisor.

We hope to see members out in strong numbers for the August Happy Hour for Good put on by Lake Union Rotary. The August happy hour benefits our dear friends at Harvest Against Hunger!

Benjamin Danielson is a pediatrician and clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Throughout his time as a pediatrician, Danielson has facilitated the creation and development of diversity programs and contributed actively to governmental policy as a member of several health boards. Danielson was the medical director of the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic from 1999 to 2020, where he then resigned and spoke out about prevalent institutional racism and a resistance to change from hospital leaders. In September 2021, it was announced that Danielson would be directing a new program, Allies in Healthier Systems for Health & Abundance in Youth (AHSHAY) to help address and prevent youth incarceration.

Kate Riley is the editorial page editor of The Seattle Times. She works with The Times editorial board to develop the opinion page’s positions on issues. She joined The Times’ editorial page in 2002 as a writer and columnist. A graduate of Redmond High School and the University of Washington, she returned to the Seattle area after spending 17 years working at Eastern Washington newspapers where she was a reporter, editorial writer and editorial page editor. She started her career as a farm writer for the Times-owned Walla Walla Union-Bulletin (Think Walla Walla Sweet Onions and the wine industry.)

Dr. Borjesson joined Washington State University as the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine in July 2020 after more than a decade at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, where she established herself as a respected pioneer and leader in the field of veterinary medicine.

She served in various leadership roles at UC-Davis, including as chair of the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology; director of the Clinical Regenerative Medicine Laboratory; and inaugural director of the Veterinary Institute for Regenerative Cures. She specialized in adult-derived stem cell research and spent her last 12 years at UC-Davis examining how stem cells alter the immune system.

A board-certified veterinary clinical pathologist, Dr. Borjesson has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. She holds two patents in mesenchymal stem cells and immunomodulation, and some of her recent research has focused on naturally occurring inflammatory bowel disease in dogs, chronic gingivostomatitis in cats and spinal cord injury in dogs. She received the Zoetis Research Excellence award in 2014 for the exceptional quality and productivity of her research efforts in regenerative medicine with an emphasis on utilizing mesenchymal stem cells as a therapeutic option for both orthopedic injury (such as bone and tendon damage) and in immunomodulation.

While her new role as dean means she is no longer in the classroom, Dr. Borjesson has always taken pride and enjoyment in helping to train and motivate the next generation of leaders and innovators in veterinary medicine. Since her first instructor role in 1996, she has taught, mentored, or interacted with hundreds of graduate, undergraduate and professional DVM students.

• All new volunteers must complete an application. Volunteers returning to Wellspring do not need to complete the application again. Returning volunteers do need to RSVP.
• Day of clothing: Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing, most tasks require lots of standing, walking, and sorting. Please dress for the weather.
• Day of tasks: Volunteers will be supporting the Family Store by sorting through clothing, toys, books, and more, or packing orders to go directly to families experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. Day of tasks will vary based on greatest need at the time.

• Parking: At our facility at 1900 Rainier Ave S. Seattle, WA 98144. Please park in visitor spots. Parking is available onsite, with additional parking available across the street, in the lower lot of the Japanese Presbyterian Church (Wellspring is the green X in the photo below, additional parking is the yellow X). Street parking available in the surrounding neighborhood. We do recommend carpooling when possible. Please do not leave valuables in cars – while we haven’t had problems with this yet, we are hoping to keep it that way.

• Donations: Volunteers are welcome to bring donations with them. For used items, please reference our donation guidelines. Our greatest needs are new socks and underwear. We are grateful for cash gifts to support the most critical needs across all programs.
