COVID-19 is fast becoming a perfect storm for worsening the opioid epidemic. People in recovery are often finding their support groups canceled and treatment providers limiting or stopping services. Dr. Jeff Allgaier, a University of Washington graduate and co-founder of Ideal Option, will share Ideal Option’s plans to offer low-barrier, innovative programs and tools to every demographic in Seattle. He will also provide a compelling look into how Ideal Option is currently making a difference in other cities and counties. Today, Ideal Option operates 72 clinics in 9 states, including 31 in Washington State. Ideal Option collaborates with existing stakeholders and providers to improve the continuum of care. This includes partnerships with emergency rooms and jail systems as well as numerous support agencies and programs addressing housing, mental health, and nutrition support among others. |

Cross-cultural conflict commonly exists across cultures not only because People of Color (PoC) have different experiences from White people, our experiences shape our reality, leading to our diverse perspectives on race, racism, and race relations. These differences lead to the inability to have effective conversations that could lead to our collective ability to dismantle our nation's legacy of institutional and systemic racism. There is a saying by an unknown author, “The process is the first part of the product”. In order to address institutional and systemic racism, we must first learn how to talk about it. In this thought-provoking presentation, Dr. Hollins will make clear why we struggle to have effective conversations about racism and provide participants with an effective way to move the race conversation forward. Caprice D. Hollins, Psy.D. is co-founder of Cultures Connecting, which provides culturally relevant professional development and support to organizations committed to improving their ability to work effectively across cultures. |

Gary Locke, interim president of Bellevue College (BC), will share more about how BC continues to serve students, and the community, amid the pandemic, and why a continued investment in higher education by the state is critical in addressing the economic impact of COVID-19 and longstanding societal inequities. Bellevue College, the state’s largest open admission institution of higher learning, offers students degree pathways in specialized career fields directly in response to workforce demands. Governor Locke will share how these programs—like Running Start—make higher education affordable to a broad range of learners while still providing an educational experience that leads to high paying careers. He will also discuss the challenges BC faces as the campus deals with the emotional aftermath of the art installation defacement, and as we recognize the impact of systemic racial injustice on Black students, staff, and faculty. BC is also facing significant budget shortfalls due to the pandemic, and Governor Locke will explain why now, more than ever, the state needs to maintain its investment in our students, and our future. |

Westland Distillery started off with the ambition to produce a single malt whiskey representative of our home here in the Pacific Northwest. Along the way, they discovered unique PNW resources—resources that fueled the opportunity to buck traditions and push a very old industry forward. Westland was inspired to innovate, resulting in compelling, delicious whiskeys that are evocative of the place they are made and the people who make them. Co-founder and Master Distiller Matt Hofmann will share Westland Distillery’s use of these PNW resources and entrepreneurial philosophy, not only for its primary products, but also its response to a demand for another kind of product in the midst of a pandemic. Matt started distilling whiskey because of a passion for flavor…a passion that led him to study brewing and distilling science in Scotland where he developed the skillset needed to start his own business. In 2010 he launched the award-winning Westland Distillery in Seattle’s SoDo district, and just a few years later was recognized on Forbes 30 Under 30 list as a tastemaker “redefining food and drink in 2016.” |

For some parks, providing great experiences has become more challenging because they have seen large and rapid increases in the number of people visiting, as well as changes to the times of year when travelers come, how they arrive, and how they want to experience parks. This has led many parks to look for solutions to the congestion they are seeing in certain areas as a result of growing visitation. We want these solutions to improve access and experiences while protecting park resources and values. The National Park Service is committed to collaborating with local communities and our business and non-profit partners to find solutions that improve the quality of visitor experience, address congestion in a thoughtful way, and maintain the tremendous economic engine our national parks provide. |
