Welcome Back to your Seattle! We will meet at 5:30 pm outside the WAC and proceed on a 30 - 40 minute walk guided by Paul Nunn of Urban ArtWorks. Walk at your own pace as we are guided through the banners brightening downtown city streets. The Seattle #4 Arts Committee produced “Welcome Back to Your Seattle”, a banner project to revitalize downtown, invest in BIPOC artists, and encourage families and businesses affected by the pandemic. The banners brighten the downtown core from James to Denny and 1st to 9th Avenues, and encourage a return downtown. All the banners were designed by artists of color, who were paid for their work. The local non-profit, Urban ArtsWorks selected the artists, and local firm SuperGraphics produced the banners, permitted them with the City of Seattle, and hung them this fall. We will meet back at the WAC for no-host beverages and bites (optional). Look forward to seeing you there.

Once teeming with bountiful salmon and fertile plains, Seattle’s Duwamish River drew both Native peoples and settlers to its shores over centuries for trading, transport, and sustenance. Unfortunately, the very utility of the river was its undoing, as decades of dumping led to the river being declared a Superfund cleanup site. Much of Washington’s history has been told through the perspective of its colonizers, obscuring and mythologizing the changes to these lands that have long been occupied by Native peoples. Through the story of the river, author BJ Cummings explores previously unrecorded Native and immigrant histories, and exposes settler falsehoods about the founding of the state. The river’s story is a call to action to align future decisions with values of collaboration, respect, and justice.
BJ Cummings (she/her) founded the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition and manages community engagement for the University of Washington’s Superfund Research Program. She is the author of The River That Made Seattle: A Natural and Human History of the Duwamish, and she was awarded the River Network’s national River Hero award for her work leading community-based clean-up and restoration of the Duwamish River. Cummings lives in Seattle.

We work to achieve these goals through educational, fellowship, service, and advocacy opportunities for Rotarians in our Club, our families, and the community. Contact Eric Christensen to learn more and how to get involved.

The mission of the Peacebuilder Committee is to encourage and empower all members of our communities to exercise mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation; and to advocate both globally and locally for peace and the non-violent resolution of conflict. Prospective projects include anti-bullying programs for at-risk youth, planting Peace Poles at prominent public installations, and outreach to facilitate greater dialogue and collaboration between law enforcement and ethnically diverse, urban neighborhoods.
Please contact Mike Hatzenbeler for information on how to attend.

The Community Service Committee promotes community service and creates projects for club members to respond to community needs, particularly for youth, education, and the homeless. They typically embark on projects right here in Seattle, where they can “get our hands dirty” and create a direct connection with the community.

It’s Time To Rethink SchoolFor more than four decades, our public schools have failed to adequately educate more than half of our children. Now, with the pandemic, the problem is even worse. Many of our children have lost at least a year of school and their social development has also suffered. Though we have fully funded our schools, during this time, supplemented with an enormous one-time grant from the Federal Government, there has been no fundamental change in how our schools operate and, therefore, we should not expect any change in the outcome. Our failing education system is still a failing education system, only more expensive. Nothing will change, improve, or get fixed if we keep school as it has always been. It’s time to rethink school. |

Join CHOOSE 180 for a short program, tour, and reception to celebrate their new renovation which Seattle 4 Rotary members helped with last July. Register HERE. The space is dedicated to the CHOOSE 180 founder, Doug Wheeler Jr. It’s now known as the Doug Wheeler Jr. Collaboratory and serves as a gathering place for the team and community members. This is a great chance to see what the finished space looks like, learn more about CHOOSE 180, and spend time together again in the space we helped to shape. This event and CHOOSE 180 spaces are currently mask-optional in accordance with the most up-to-date local and state guidelines. We are also mindful of people's varying comfort levels with masking and social distancing and encourage asking when interacting with others. This policy is subject to change if local or state mandates change. |
