Paul Shoemaker, a writer, and speaker to socially conscious and civically active leaders, in the public, private and non-profit sectors, will share his profiles for change agents who he "dubs" "Rebuilders" and offers the 5 vital traits change leaders need to solve big problems. Join us as Paul discusses the complexity of social, economic, and health challenges facing us in the 2020s that are radically different from those we faced even one generation ago. He argues the pace and downward path of inequities in America over the last 25 years is not socially, morally, or economically sustainable. Paul will share his view that traditional leadership is not sufficient to rebuild an America that has become too uneven and siloed. |

Welcome Back to your Seattle! We will meet at 5:30 pm outside the WAC and proceed on a 30 - 40 minute walk guided by Paul Nunn of Urban ArtWorks. Walk at your own pace as we are guided through the banners brightening downtown city streets. The Seattle #4 Arts Committee produced “Welcome Back to Your Seattle”, a banner project to revitalize downtown, invest in BIPOC artists, and encourage families and businesses affected by the pandemic. The banners brighten the downtown core from James to Denny and 1st to 9th Avenues, and encourage a return downtown. All the banners were designed by artists of color, who were paid for their work. The local non-profit, Urban ArtsWorks selected the artists, and local firm SuperGraphics produced the banners, permitted them with the City of Seattle, and hung them this fall. We will meet back at the WAC for no-host beverages and bites (optional). Look forward to seeing you there.

Once teeming with bountiful salmon and fertile plains, Seattle’s Duwamish River drew both Native peoples and settlers to its shores over centuries for trading, transport, and sustenance. Unfortunately, the very utility of the river was its undoing, as decades of dumping led to the river being declared a Superfund cleanup site. Much of Washington’s history has been told through the perspective of its colonizers, obscuring and mythologizing the changes to these lands that have long been occupied by Native peoples. Through the story of the river, author BJ Cummings explores previously unrecorded Native and immigrant histories, and exposes settler falsehoods about the founding of the state. The river’s story is a call to action to align future decisions with values of collaboration, respect, and justice.
BJ Cummings (she/her) founded the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition and manages community engagement for the University of Washington’s Superfund Research Program. She is the author of The River That Made Seattle: A Natural and Human History of the Duwamish, and she was awarded the River Network’s national River Hero award for her work leading community-based clean-up and restoration of the Duwamish River. Cummings lives in Seattle.

The mission of the Peacebuilder Committee is to encourage and empower all members of our communities to exercise mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation; and to advocate both globally and locally for peace and the non-violent resolution of conflict. Prospective projects include anti-bullying programs for at-risk youth, planting Peace Poles at prominent public installations, and outreach to facilitate greater dialogue and collaboration between law enforcement and ethnically diverse, urban neighborhoods.
Please contact Mike Hatzenbeler for information on how to attend.

Impact on Student Learning and Businesses Owned by People of ColorRotary Mentors guide student teams during their consulting process and provide professional expertise and industry-specific knowledge while coaching and mentoring small business owners to help them implement the work of student teams. This session will showcase the impact this program has on students learning new skills and career advancement. It will include a speaker panel discussion with an alum of the UW Foster School, a small business owner, and a Rotary Business Mentor. The Consulting & Business Development Center links students, faculty, and staff from the Foster School of Business with a racially and ethnically diverse business and nonprofit community to expand students' knowledge and skills, help small businesses grow, create and retain jobs, open educational opportunities for underrepresented minority students, and stimulate innovative economic development research. The Rotary Business Mentors committee, under the co-chairmanship of Bill Marshall and Terry VanNostrand, provides Seattle 4 members with an opportunity to coach UW Foster School of Business students as they help businesses in underserved communities to plan for and execute growth strategies. |

The Art Committee is delighted to invite fellow Rotarians to a matinee showing of Blue on February 27, 2022. Blue is the 2020 winner for Best New Opera (Music Critics Association). From the award-winning team of librettist Tazewell Thompson and composer Jeanine Tesori, Blue, presents a portrait of contemporary African American life: of love and loss, church, sisterhood, and most importantly, family. More information is available at https://www.seattleopera.org/blue. The Opera starts at 2:00 pm and Rotarians are invited to mingle in the Allen Hall at intermission. Post-show, there is an optional conversation that is open to the public in which Tazewell Thompson and Christina Scheppelmann will be conducting a Q&A.
