Dr. Kim Schrier and Leah Rutman, After Roe v. Wade

Westin Hotel and on Zoom

Aug 10, 2022

Congresswoman Dr. Kim Schrier is the representative for Washington's 8th Congressional District. She is the first and only pediatrician in Congress, and prior to serving the 8th district in the other Washington, she served families in the Issaquah area as a pediatrician for 17 years. In Congress she sits on the Energy & Commerce Committee, which oversees healthcare and energy policy, and is the only member from the Pacific Northwest on the Agriculture Committee. As the only pro-choice woman doctor in all of Congress, she is a fierce defender of women's reproductive rights and is the only candidate in her race for re-election this year who will protect a woman's right to choose.

Dr. Schrier will be co-presenting with Leah Rutman, Policy Counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington, as they discuss the ramifications of the Supreme Court's recent overturning of the Roe v. Wade precedent.

International Service Committee (Monthly except Jun, Jul, and Dec)
Aug 17, 2022 10:30 AM
Serves to fulfill Rotary's mission of "advancing international understanding, goodwill, and peace." The committee selects projects that positively impact the health, education, and welfare of less advantaged people in other countries, with a particular emphasis on youth. Actively works with clubs in our District and abroad to leverage — via matching grants — the amount of money available for a project. Members get involved through direct knowledge of the project or by volunteering. Prior focuses have included malaria projects in Zambia, Tanzania, and Uganda; microcredit and water projects in India; de-mining projects in Vietnam and Lebanon; AIDS orphan support in South Africa and Ethiopia; education/literacy projects in Nepal, Chile, and Hungary; and more than a decade of wide-ranging projects in Russia.
Please contact Alicia Flatt for information on how to attend.

Brent Beardall, WaFd CEO

Westin Hotel and on Zoom

Sep 07, 2022 12:30 PM

“Leading with Gratitude - The Intersection of Foresight, Hard Work, and Luck”

Brent Beardall will present a 105 year old bank went from a technological neophyte to an industry leading digital first bank.

Brent Beardall's 20+ years at WaFd Bank and his efforts to make the bank a "digital first bank" will shape his presentation to Rotary members during this weekly meeting.

Mr. Beardall joined WaFd Bank in 2001 as Vice President & Controller. In 2003 he was promoted to Chief Financial Officer, a position he served in for eleven years. Prior to this he served as Chief Banking Officer where he was responsible for all client-facing activities of the bank. He was awarded the title of President & CEO in 2017, becoming only the sixth CEO in the bank’s 104-year history.

In 2018 WaFd undertook a bold initiative “Vision 2025” to transform into a “digital first bank,” with the vision of having a real time understanding of clients’ financial health, anticipating their needs, and helping them make better financial decisions. His simple ask of all employees is to “love what they do and make a difference.”

Mr. Beardall received a master’s degree in Professional Accounting from Brigham Young University and is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Washington State.  He completed Stanford University's Executive Program in August 2013. In 2012 he was recognized as “CFO of the year” by the Puget Sound Business Journal and currently serves on the boards of the YMCA of Greater Seattle, United Way King County, Pacific Coast Banking School, and the Washington Bankers Association. Mr. Beardall lives in Sammamish with his wife of 25 years, Jennifer, and their three children.

Off the court, Roger is a financial expert who has been profiled in a cover story of Money magazine; an acclaimed author of financial books; and a keynoter at conventions.
