JJ McKay, Cannabis: A Fast Growing Industry Investors and States are High On
October 23rd at Noon
The Westin, 1900 5th Ave.
In the last five years, marijuana has been legalized in 33 states and has generated $750 million in revenue. The $10 billion legal marijuana industry is growing alongside the CBD industry, with each expected to be a $40 billion industry by 2030. Constellation, Altria, Scott’s Miracle Grow, the Pritzker family and more have invested. It seems everyone wants to ride the “high” tide of the market, but there are warning signs for companies.
This week, JJ McKay will provide his insight on the legal marijuana and CBD industry. With a rich history in consumer appetites, JJ McKay has worked on programs with companies that include Costco and the American Heart Association. In 2016, McKay founded The Fresh Toast, a media content company and lifestyle & health platform with a side of cannabis. It is an award-winning digital leader for the industry.
Former Washington State Supreme Court Justice Faith Ireland introduced our speaker, King County Superior Court Presiding Judge Jim Rogers. Ms. Ireland said that Judge Rogers was elected in 2004 and has presided over numerous cases that include civil, criminal, family law, dependency, and involuntary treatment. He is a graduate of the University of Washington and Georgetown Law School. He also served in the Peace Corps. Ms. Ireland said that Judge Rogers would focus on two major issues facing the court system today: the state of the King County Superior Court system and the incarceration crisis.
Judge Rogers began his remarks by speaking about the importance of jury duty. He said that jury duty provided the most direct experience a citizen will ever have in finding out how the court system works.
He then provided a historical glimpse of how the court system was developed in the 1889 Washington State Constitution. A two-court system approach was adopted: Court of Appeals and Superior Court. Currently, there are 53 judges and nine commissioners that make up the Superior Court of King County. There has been a 60% change in the makeup of the Superior Court in recent years.
As Rotarians, we are leaders connecting for extraordinary good –both in our community and around the world. Together we are eradicating polio and malaria, bringing fresh water to rural villages worldwide to stop the spread of disease, and helping our neighbors in need with housing, healthy foods, and educational opportunities.
Once a year we ask you to fulfill your membership obligations and take action by making two gifts that will transform our world. One is to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF). The other is to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Thank you for taking action now to help our club have a powerful and positive impact on our world.
District Governor Elect and Seattle 4 Rotary Past President, Cathy Gibson, will be leading a Seattle Rotary delegation to the centennial celebration of the Rotary Club of Shanghai which the Rotary Club of Seattle sponsored in 1919. This historic event for the first club in China will be held October 18-20 with the main gala on Saturday evening October 19 at the Grand Millennium Hong Qiao Hotel in Shanghai.
