President Jon's Four Cs: CONVENING, CONNECTING, COOPERATING, and COMMUNICATING!
Next Lunch Meeting - Registration Deadline TODAY!
Wednesday, September 4
12:30 PM
Plymouth Church and Zoom
Kate Riley, Seattle Times
This 2024 election is transformational, and not just at the federal level, although the presidential decision, whatever it is, will have far-reaching effects for Washington state.
But, voters at the state level will also be making consequential decisions for a new governor, attorney general and lands commissioner. Will they check the one-party control of Olympia by embracing initiatives that would undo hard-fought climate, long-term care and tax policies?

The club’s Future Vision is focused on sustainability. Club Treasurer Jeff Parker reports the club is now covering all meeting costs as a result of shifting to a lower cost venue. While we won’t be at Plymouth Church forever, it is providing a transitional venue so we can balance our budget for meetings.
Between meals, room rents and AV charges, our meetings at hotel venues were running between $5,650 to $6,300 per meeting, which was significantly over budget. This year, with the move to Plymouth, our costs are significantly lower at about $3,250 per meeting, and we have been able to cover our costs and remain within our meetings' budget.
Implementation of the Future Vision has also prompted significant “right-sizing” of our club’s operations resulting in reduced operating expenses.
The Future Vision Implementation Team is hard at work to implement other elements of our Future Vision plan. Send your comments to feedback@seattlerotary.org to make sure your input is reviewed and considered by the Future Vision Implementation Team.
President Jon introduced the day’s once-monthly ZOOM only meeting as a way to attract speakers from all over the country, as he introduced Verna Williams, Equal Justice Works CEO from her Washington D.C. office. She is a graduate of Georgetown University and Harvard Law School and named CEO in 2022 following her work as Dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Law, the national women’s law center and she has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court. She is only the second CEO of Equal Justice Works in more than 30 years.
“Our mission is to help make the legal system just and fair to those who cannot afford legal counsel -- because in this country you can lose your home, financial independence and child where your opponent has legal counsel, and you do not. Equal justice’s work exists to address that problem,” she said. “We create opportunities for lawyers to transform their passion for equal justice into a lifelong commitment to public service.”
Her slide presentation described how Equal Justice Work mobilizes enthusiastic public service leaders to dedicate themselves to opportunities in public interest law. Since its inception Equal Justice Work has awarded 2.700 fellowships in the program to help build a community of lawyers committed to public service that will transform their passion for equal justice into a career.
