The State of Play: Youth and Physical Activity
Too many young people in King County – particularly in communities of color – face barriers to physical activity even in a region famous for outdoor recreation, a study conducted by the University of Washington’s Center for Leadership in Athletics in partnership with King County Parks and the Aspen Institute found. The King County Play Equity Coalition was established to implement the report's recommendations and includes local professional sports teams and community-based organizations. Join us for a discussion with Julie McCleery and Bookie Gates as we learn about the coalition's work to increase rates of King County youth meeting the CDC's physical activity guidelines and ensure all youth have access to the social, emotional, academic, and physical benefits of movement through sports, play, and outdoor recreation. Bookie Gates is a former WSU baseball player and chair of the King County Play Equity Coalition. Julie McCleery is the Director of Research-Practice Partnerships at the UW Center for Leadership in Athletics.
Desert Song, written and performed by a new vocal quartet with Northwest roots, Säje (rhymes with “beige"). Thanks to our VP of Service, Jan Levy, for bringing this to our attention. Her friend's niece is a member of the group which was nominated for a Grammy Award.
It is that time of the year when we ask our members to contribute to The Rotary Foundation (TRF), associated with Rotary International. The Rotary Foundation provides funds for the following initiatives:
Promotes Peace
Fights Diseases
Creates Clean Water and Sanitation
Serves Young Mothers and Children
Supports Education
Grows Local Economies
Protects the Environment
Creates District Matching Grants
Will End Polio Forever
If you believe in any or all of these initiatives there is no better place to invest your philanthropic resources.
We ask each member to contribute at least $100 every year, and many of our members contribute much more. Let's reach our $70,000 goal!
We have two challenge matching gifts to consider this year:
For new members, Tom Mesaros will match the 20 first time donors to TRF who give $50 so that they become $100 Sustaining Donors.
For first-time Paul Harris donors, Jeff Pyatt will match donors who give up to $500, and will match them with an additional $500 to qualify them as a $1,000 Paul Harris Fellow.
You may make your donation with a credit card directly to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) by calling 1-866-076-8279. They have wonderful customer service and a live representative is typically available with no wait time to assist you. If you prefer to donate online, click HERE for TRF's donation portal. Thank you in advance. We want to reach our goal of $70,000 by March 31st.

The Impressionist Garden
with Rebecca Albiani
Join us for this special happy hour presentation with art historian and Frye Art Museum lecturer, Rebecca Albiani. Gardens were an important motif of early Impressionist art, featuring prominently in the works of Monet, Renoir, Morisot, and Cassatt. Much later in his career, Monet would create a garden at his home in Giverny, where he installed the famous Japanese bridge over a pond of waterlilies and painted them gloriously in his final decades. Join us for this special visual treat and celebration of spring! Registration is free for members and their guests.
Rebecca Albiani is a Graduate Lecturing Fellow at Washington’s National Gallery and a Fulbright Scholar in Venice. She received a MA from Stanford University and a BA from the University of California, Berkeley.
Join us on a Single Malt Scotch Tour of Scotland from the Northern Islands to the Southern Lowlands. Scotland is known for some of the best whiskies in the world. Kevin Crane will lead us through a journey of the senses and will unfold the sublime nature and mystery of Scotch. You don’t need to be an experienced Scotch drinker to attend.
Rotary members shall have an opportunity to share their Scotch experiences and recommendations as they bring their own wee dram to this virtual event.
