President's Party

Time to celebrate the end of the Rotary year in style at The Swedish Club! We plan on honoring our outgoing presidents while enjoying plenty of social time together.

Last Meeting of the Year Brings Good Vibes, Positivity

President Jon welcomed everyone gathered at the Motif Hotel for his final meeting as club president (his “last time ringing the bell”).

Jon remembered our longtime member Anne Farrell who passed away over the weekend. He reminded us that in addition to serving as the CEO of the Seattle Foundation, Anne was our club’s first female president.

The Rotary Rogues (Linda Rough, Michael Harris, Vicky Oxley, Don Murphy, Trish Bostrom, Jevon Powell, Eric Laschever, Sten Crissey, Jimmy Collins) put together a clever musical tribute for this last meeting with their versions of “Bridge Over Troubled Waters,” “Get Me to the Church on Time,” and “Somewhere (There’s a Place for Us)” with lyrics changed to reference Jon and our club, provided by Rogues’ member Linda Rough.

Jon mentioned how great it is to be adding new club members over the last year which include two at today’s meeting: Mariola Lisewska (introduced by Faith Ireland) and Rebecca Sayre (introduced by Jenn Gladish).

Jon introduced today’s special guest speaker, his brother, Rabbi Dan Bridge, who became a rabbi in Cincinnati and then moved back to Seattle where he was the rabbi at the University of Washington. “Service is the rent we pay for living,” Dan mentioned as he began that this saying was in the Bridge home and that Jon’s mission has always been to “fix the world.”

We had a wonderful evening celebrating our highest level of donors to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF) at this year's Pinkham & Skeel Reception at the Seattle Tennis Club! Thanks to Tiffany Lewis and Fedva Dikmen for securing the venue, and to Charmaine Vazquez for the event images! And finally, we can't forget thanking Vicky Oxley for planning and bringing in our excellent grantee guest speakers.

SRSF Update

SRSF was honored a few weeks ago at the Rotary Boys & Girls Club on 19th and Spruce! Current SRSF President Vicky Oxley received this award on behalf of SRSF and the club for their support over the years.

In 1939, Seattle’s Rotary Youth Foundation embarked on its first major project, one that is still a source of Rotary involvement and pride 70+ years later. In the beginning, it was called the George Colman Boys Club and was located in the basement of Plymouth Congregational Church where it served 300 boys.

Now known as the Rotary Boys and Girls Club – or “the Rotary,” as the kids call it – it continues to have substantial Rotarian involvement. In 1987, Rotarians donated $450,000 to add a new floor for the Rotary Educational Assistance Program (REAP), which provides tutoring and mentoring to help youth reach their full potential.

From 2001-2003, an additional $375,000 was provided to the Rotary Boys & Girls Club for capital improvements. In 2016, Rotarians partnered with KaBOOM! and Delta Airlines to install a new playground.

Rotarians continue to serve as board members, mentors, volunteers, and donors. The club’s Learning Center and its new Computer Lab were made possible by the generosity of individual Rotarians.

Thank you again for your very generous donations to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation!
