Maddy grew up in Vancouver, WA and went to Western Washington University where she majored in psychology and French. While at Western, she did a semester abroad program in rural Kenya where she volunteered at a high school and health clinic while learning about international development issues and initiatives. Through this experience, she developed a passion for public policy and advocacy.
While her public policy work started with economic development, since then it has ranged across a variety of critical issues. When she graduated from Western, she worked as an intern at the World Affairs Council. Subsequently, she worked as a legislative aid for the ACLU, and then for the Alternatives to the Death Penalty initiative in Washington.
Next, she worked for Bono’s One Campaign, an effort to fight poverty and disease globally, serving for six years as their Western Regional Manager, organizing volunteers and turning them into advocates.
And then, 18 months ago she joined the Committee for Children, where she is an advocate for improved child welfare in the US and overseas.
When Maddy is not advocating on behalf of others, she likes to scuba dive and to travel. Her next trip is to Belize and she says the coolest place she has travelled to is Egypt!
In May, Maddy graduated from Syracuse University with her Master’s in Public Affairs. So, belated congratulations to our graduate! She is planning to allocate all that time she spent studying to participating in Rotary to improve her ties to the Seattle community.
Please join us in welcoming our newest member, Maddy Vonhoff!
