The King County Superior Court has 61 judicial officials, 53 of whom are elected judges. These officials are located in four courthouses, where they render decisions and hear trials every day, in one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States. Judge Rogers will address the state of your County Superior Court, discuss the crime wave of the 1980s and 90s, the resulting incarceration crisis and where we stand in King County, and the current safety challenges faced by anyone seeking to enter the downtown King County Courthouse.
Judge Jim Rogers currently serves as the Presiding Judge for King County Superior Court. Elected in 2004, he has presided over many trials for cases involving civil, criminal, family law, dependency, and involuntary treatment issues.

Malaria kills approximately half a million people every year, with 432,000 dead in 2017 according to the most recent data, and most of those deaths are children in the most vulnerable areas. Philip Welkhoff, Director of the Malaria Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, spoke to Seattle 4 Rotarians about the progress that has been made in the fight against malaria, the reasons for hope in the road ahead, and that urgent action is needed.
Welkhoff, who was accompanied at lunch by his wife, Martina, was introduced to Rotary at a young age. Speaking of Rotary as a force for good, Welkhoff told the story of growing up on the north coast of Haiti, where the water systems that they drank from were installed by Rotarians. Before joining the Gates Foundation, Welkhoff was the Director of Research at the Institute for Disease Modeling, where he helped develop computer simulations of malaria, polio and other disease transmissions to assist health professionals and scientists in working toward the eradication of these diseases. Welkhoff has his PhD in Computational and Applied Mathematics from Princeton and joined the Gates Foundation in March 2018.
As Rotarians, we are leaders connecting for extraordinary good –both in our community and around the world. Together we are eradicating polio and malaria, bringing fresh water to rural villages worldwide to stop the spread of disease, and helping our neighbors in need with housing, healthy foods, and educational opportunities.
Once a year we ask you to fulfill your membership obligations and take action by making two gifts that will transform our world. One is to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF). The other is to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Thank you for taking action now to help our club have a powerful and positive impact on our world.
District Governor Elect and Seattle 4 Rotary Past President, Cathy Gibson, will be leading a Seattle Rotary delegation to the centennial celebration of the Rotary Club of Shanghai which the Rotary Club of Seattle sponsored in 1919.
