Gather - Engage - Serve
NEXT WEEK'S MEETING
Ashlie Bryant
Wednesday, Oct. 4
The Westin & on Zoom
Time: 12:30 - 1:30 PM
Prevention Matters in Ending Human Trafficking.
Come hear Ashlie Bryant from 3Strands Global Foundation share about the PROTECT program that has reached almost 1,000,000 youth. We will hear her "why" and the outcomes of prevention as well as how Rotarians can help scale PROTECT in Washington.
This week was a virtual-only meeting that began with President Nancy welcoming everyone, including several guests joining us virtually from India, on a rainy day/week. Bill Center inspired us by reflecting on what leads someone to “tackle ambitious, audacious goals” and connecting that to our speaker today. He commented that these people all have vison, leadership and charisma and above all, courage in common. Nancy thanked Bill as “one of those inspiring us in our lives.”
Our own member, Heather Fitzpatrick of Wellspring Family Services, provided an update on their work to address family homelessness, Preventing Homelessness, A Better Solution.
We WILL meet on Tuesday, October 10th 5:30-7:00 PM
Renaissance Hotel
515 6th Ave., Seattle
SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE
Our event will be on the main floor of the hotel, with visible signage from the lobby area on the SW corner of the main floor (visible from the bar area). There is a special Rotary rate of $10 in the Renaissance parking garage on Madison just west of 6th Avenue.
There will be complimentary appetizers and a cash bar. We will have a chance to meet with Seattle 4 Rotarians and learn about some of the ways Seattle 4 members have plugged into service that has been fun and fulfilling.
Important: Change of Meeting Cadence
~ From President Nancy
Update on Meeting Schedules. Beginning in October, we are making a change to our Rotary schedules. Our Board describes it as a change in our Meeting Cadence. On the first and third meetings of each month, we will have a luncheon meeting at one of our downtown venues. For these meetings, there will be a live Zoom feed, so that members that are unable to be with us in person can still join in. Then, on the 2nd week of each month, we will have a more informal gathering, on a weekday late afternoon or evening, to have fellowship and a discussion topic or activity to do together. We will call these our “Second Week Events.”
Our first Second Week Event is on Tuesday, October 10th from 5:30-7pm at the Renaissance Hotel at 515 - 6th Avenue in downtown Seattle (on the corner of 6th Avenue and Madison). We will have the chance to socialize and enjoy complimentary appetizers and have a SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE, in which some Seattle 4 Rotarians will share how these members have plugged into service that has been fun and fulfilling.
The emphasis on service ties in with the other change in our Cadence. We will not have a meeting scheduled during the 4th week of each month. Instead, we will keep you informed of service opportunities available throughout the month. These service opportunities can be something you can do on your own or use as a great way to find another Rotarian or friends of yours to volunteer with you. With each of our service suggestions, we will have a point person from our Club that will be there, with whom you can serve.
One bit of useful research in our District helped us understand that now was the time to try this change of Cadence. Of District Clubs that were surveyed, one-half of them are offering one or two evening meetings or happy hours for members each month, in lieu of their regular meeting time. Clubs that have switched out some of their regular meeting time with evening events have reported increase in membership, particularly among younger members, and more attendance at these evening events than were anticipated.
We hope to have this change in cadence allow us to reduce the monthly program cost that each member pays and will report back to you in October on that. As you may not know, our Club spends thousands and thousands of dollars per luncheon meeting on audio visual expenses to have screens, microphones and live Zoom feeds of the meetings (followed by our ability to see the replay of the meeting at a later date). Our sponsors cover a fraction of this cost. So, we want to make an adjustment in the program expense and have it be sustainable. We promise to update you on this in October.
Board update on meals: Starting in October, all individual payments for meeting lunches across the board will move to $40. Therefore, if you are not on the program plan and currently pay-as-you-go for lunch (either via pre-payment online with the Clover link or at the door), the rate will now be $40 for all, including visiting Rotarians and prospective member guests.
Note that if you are not retired and have not worked out a temporary pause of program plan payments with Mary due to extenuating circumstances, you are still required to pay into the program plan per the current rules and based on current meeting costs, which the club is continuing to monitor.
For our October 10 evening event, members will be asked to cover their own drink purchases but appetizers will be provided. Please note that future evening events may have a cost but those details will be determined on an event-by-event basis.
Know a young person in your life who is looking for a unique summer experience? Share with them about the District 5030 Short Term Youth Exchange program! The Short Term Youth Exchange program is now open for applications for Summer 2024 for high school students aged 15-18. Students will go over to their host country to stay with a family for a month and then will return with their youth exchange student to share their culture for another month. This unique exchange promotes exploration of cultures, friendship between students and families, and promotes the spirit of Rotary within high school students! Applications are open through the end of October. Reach out to Tabitha Claus, District Youth Exchange Committee Member for more information.
The Rotary Business Mentors committee, under the co-chairmanship of Barton DeLacy and Paul Tsai, provides Seattle 4 members with an opportunity to coach UW Foster School of Business students as they help businesses in lower income communities plan for and execute growth strategies.
Rotary Business Mentors serve two critical functions. They guide UW Foster School of Business student teams during their consulting process and provide professional expertise and industry-specific knowledge to student teams. Students report that mentors have enabled them to gain new insights into business management. Additionally, mentors coach small business owners on strategies for implementing change within their company. Following the completion of the students’ work, mentors work with their business owners, helping them implement the strategies that the students have developed.
The Deadline to register as a Rotary Business Mentor is October 6, 2023
The Peacebuilders Committee is happy to share that we are bringing back our Book Club. Many Seattle $ members participated in our Book Club a few years ago with readings focused on racial justice. For our first read this time around we have selected The River that Made Seattle by BJ Cummings. We will be scheduling a group discussion of the book in November so you have some time to get your hands on a copy of this impactful story about a misused and misunderstood but vitally important river.

Wing Luke Museum Attack
On September 13th there was a vicious, racially motivated attack shattering windows at the Wing Luke Museum in the International District.
As members of Seattle Rotary we condemn this wanton destruction and visible harm done to a vital Seattle institution. Hate crimes like this have no place in our community.
Meet fellow Rotarians and get involved in service. See below for a list of committees. Email the committee chair by clicking on their name. Or, contact Carma McKay for more information.
