After Roe v. Wade
US Representative Dr. Kim Schrier and Leah Rutman of ACLU Washington
Congresswoman Dr. Kim Schrier is the representative for Washington's 8th Congressional District. She is the first and only pediatrician in Congress, and prior to serving the 8th district in the other Washington, she served families in the Issaquah area as a pediatrician for 17 years. In Congress, she sits on the Energy & Commerce Committee, which oversees healthcare and energy policy, and is the only member from the Pacific Northwest on the Agriculture Committee. As the only pro-choice woman doctor in all of Congress, she is a fierce defender of women's reproductive rights and is the only candidate in her race for re-election this year who will protect a woman's right to choose.
Dr. Schrier will be co-presenting with Leah Rutman, Policy Counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington. They will discuss the ramifications of the Supreme Court's recent overturning of the Roe v. Wade precedent.
The Navy Band played festive, patriotic music to start the program and then President Beth walked up to the podium with “Danger Zone” from Top Gun playing, given today’s Seafair and Navy/Coast Guard theme as well! Beth reminded us that this week is the culmination of Seafair and features Fleet Week, the Blue Angels and the Hydro races and gave her appreciation for “those that serve in the military.”
The Navy Band led us in the National Anthem and Faith Ireland inspired us with water-themed remarks in honor of Seafair. She mentioned all the different bodies of water in our area (101 lakes, 44 rivers/creeks in King County) and everything that water provides: drinking water, ferries, maritime economy, cruise ships and tourism, etc. Seafair is her highlight of summer fun, so she encouraged us to be grateful for water.
