This Wednesday's January Evening Event took us to the Rotary Boys and Girls Club.
In 1944, Seattle’s Rotary Youth Foundation embarked on its first major project, one that is still a source of Rotary involvement and pride 65 years later. In the beginning, it was called the George Colman Boys Club and was located in the basement of Plymouth Congregational Church where it served 300 boys.
Now known as the Rotary Boys and Girls Club – or “the Rotary,” as the kids call it – it continues to have substantial Rotarian involvement. In 1987, Rotarians donated $450,000 to add a new floor for the Rotary Educational Assistance Program (REAP), which provides tutoring and mentoring to help youth reach their full potential.
From 2001-2003, an additional $375,000 was provided to the Rotary Boys & Girls Club for capital improvements. In 2016, Rotarians partnered with KaBOOM! and Delta Airlines to install a new playground.
We want Rotarians to continue to serve as board members, mentors, volunteers, and donors. The club’s Learning Center and its new Computer Lab were made possible by the generosity of individual Rotarians.
For more information on how you can connect and serve with our Rotary Boys and Girls Club, please contact Club Director (and Rotary Club of Seattle member!) Kendrick Davis by CLICKING HERE.
We had a wonderfully informative tour of the Rotary Boys and Girls Club Wednesday evening. We got to see the building and understand how the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation has provided so much support to RBGC over the years in many ways including the building and also student scholarships and meals. Thank you to Kendrick and his team for an excellent evening!
The RBGC could really use some Rotarian support in helping 1st-3rd grade students learn to read. If you are interested in finding out more about this volunteer opportunity, please reach out to Nancy Cahill or Dave Given.
SRSF also recently distributed funds towards grants to Nature Bridge and the Limbe Water Project, thanks to the financial support of members like YOU!
As of this morning we have received 98 responses to our club survey. If you have not filled it out yet, we please ask that you do so! We are gleaning some interesting and informative insights from responses that have come through so far and we look forward to sharing them with you soon.
Family and friends of Lynn Lindsay will be hosting a memorial and celebration of life on Friday, January 31 at 3:00 PM at the Rainier Club for those that want to attend. Refreshments will follow.
