Governor Inslee Provides Powerful Presence at Memorable Meeting

Thanks to Julie Kang and other club members that provided pictures!

Dorothy Bullitt welcomed Rotarians with introductory remarks. She recounted that the Seattle 4 Rotary Club is the 4th oldest in the world and has been very influential. She mentioned that such notable people

like Bill Gates, Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, and President Ford have addressed the Seattle Rotary. She said that the longest serving three-term Governor in the United States right now, Jay Inslee would be joining Seattle Rotary today.

Dorothy asked Raymond Tymas-Jones and Kia Sams to lead Rotary members in the singing of the National Anthem.

Business Mentors Announcement

Barton Delacy and Paul Tsai urged Rotarians to volunteer and become mentors to a diversity of businesses this year. They stressed that it would be very interesting for Rotarians, as it is for the businesses.

She then introduced journalist Mark Wright, who would lead a conversation with Governor Jay Inslee.

Highlights: (Questions asked by Mark Wright)

  • Governor Inslee praised former Governor Dan Evans who passed away recently. Today would have been his 99th birthday. Some but not all of his achievements included the development of the Community College system, Environmental Protection, the first to develop the Vietnamese refugee program, and a commitment to reform our not so fair taxation system.

As a Democrat, Governor Inslee said he wished Governor Evans  could have been the Republican nominee for President this year.

  • Governor Inslee reflected that he feels the same passion as he did on the first day on the job. He has enjoyed visiting with young people who are doing great things for our future.

He is very optimistic about the future but he suggested that it all could be in jeopardy, if we don’t bring climate change under control.

  • Governor Inslee met with 30 people yesterday and their families who had been released from our penitentiaries, due to a clemency program that he instituted.

He said the stories made him feel a great sense of pride. It demonstrated that people can change the better.

  • He did dedicate much of his discussion with Mark Wright on climate change. He said that Washington is the most diverse state in the country in terms of natural resources. We have the ocean, lakes, mountains, rain forests, and deserts. Growing up in the state made him feel more connected to our environment. He also indicated that clean energy creates jobs and is good for the economy. To demonstrate how dire our situation is becoming, he held up a dead western red cedar twig. He said that there is a red cedar tree on the Governor’s home grounds which is also dead.

The Governor said that over 300,000 salmon couldn’t make it up the Columbia River this year because the water was too hot. He continued, protecting the ecosystem is not an option but a must.

  • He spoke about some of the initiatives on the ballot and how it would affect the state, including repeal of the capital gains tax. He said that the tax would impact about 1,000 of our most wealthy residents.
  • Governor Inslee spoke of managing the pandemic as being one of the most difficult challenges that he faced while being Governor. He said that if we didn’t put the restrictions into place as we did, it is estimated that an additional 18,000 people would have died in Washington state.   Had the country placed the restrictions that Washington state did, an estimated 430,000 lives would have been saved.
