Next Week's Meeting
Wednesday, December 7
Westin Hotel & Zoom
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM
Emily Cantrell, PROVAIL
Building Pathways to Inclusion
As a business leader, it’s rare to go a day without hearing or talking about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace. George Floyd’s murder reignited the DEI movement, and companies across the country immediately ramped up their DEI efforts. Yet, there is one ‘d’ often left out of these discussions: disability.
According to the CDC, 61 million Americans - about 26 percent of our population - have some type of disability. Yet, because these individuals may require accommodations, they are often marginalized.
Seattle-based nonprofit PROVAIL believes every one of us has the right to pursue the life we choose to live, and has spent 80 years fighting the stigma around disabilities. As one of the state’s largest multi-service agencies, PROVAIL supports people with disabilities to fulfill their life choices through its three program areas: Employment Services, Home & Lifestyle, and Mobility & Communication.
President Beth opened the meeting promptly at 12:30 p.m. on Zoom. She acknowledged November as American Indian Heritage Month, and how we conduct Rotary meetings on Indigenous People’s land. Thanks to Faith Ireland, Beth found out about the book, The Code Talkers (25th Anniversary Edition) about the important role of Navajo Indians using their native language to help win World War II (www.amazon.com/Navajo-Code-Talkers-25th-Anniversary). Mary Goldie introduced visiting Rotarians and guests.
Tuesday, December 6
5:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Hyatt Regency Lake Washington
Rotarian and Japanese General Consul Hisao Inagaki would like to invite all Rotarians to this disaster preparedness seminar.
The threat of destructive earthquakes and tsunamis that have historically hit the Washington coastline are a major concern. While the risk of land liquefaction and damage to critical infrastructure such as power lines and underground utilities during an earthquake in the Seattle area is known, recent studies suggests that the Seattle Fault can also generate a tsunami with the same level of destruction as could be experienced on the coast. This seminar will introduce technology from Japan’s experience preparing for and recovering from destructive earthquakes and tsunamis that could occur in Washington State and share recent research into disaster preparedness.
