Next Week's Meeting
Wednesday, June 1
Westin Hotel and on Zoom
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM
Chevy Cook, Military Mentors (Presenting Virtually)
Chaveso “Chevy” Cook, Ph.D. is an active-duty Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army. His career started in the historic 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. During his military career he’s deployed during “The Surge”, the “Arab Spring”, and the fight against ISIS in roles working with a wide variety of American embassies, local leaders, and non-governmental organizations, in addition to assisting/training foreign militaries, and serving multiple special operations task forces.
Cook's organization, Military Mentors, was founded in 2015 to improve the quality of leaders within the military by connecting military leaders to the tools and professional contacts they need to succeed.
Ashley Burman, a Young Rotary leader who joined our Club last fall, introduced tech executive Margo Day, who co-founded the Mekuno Project with World Vision. Margo said how much she loves that our motto is “Rotarians Inspire Hope”; as that is what her talk is about, she knows that this power is transformative. Her time in 3rd grade set the foundation for her life of helping people and in particular, girls, which she would see to fruition when she visited Kenya with World Vision in 2009.
She learned about the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage that is prevalent in tribes in rural Kenya. 200 million women have undergone FGM as it is a prerequisite for a 12-year-old to be married. She heard about girls as young as 8-years-old that run away to avoid FGM and go to “rescue centers.” She saw two things in these girls: determination for a better life and desire to be loved as a valuable child. She said that she never would have had the courage that those did.

Join District President Howard Cohen and District Governor Elect Kae Peterson for an end-of-the-year Rotary celebration at Newcastle Golf Club in June!
The day will start with our annual Golf Tournament, raising much-needed funds for Rotary Polio Eradication, followed by our dinner and celebration. At the dinner, I will share with you a review of this past Rotary year and you will get to hear what is in store for the new Rotary year from our incoming District Governor Kae Peterson. We will share club and district accomplishments and honor outstanding Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Interactors for their contributions to Rotary.
This is a time to gather together to celebrate all that Rotary does locally and globally. Catch up with old friends and meet new friends. This is also a great time for clubs to come together to meet and celebrate their own past year's successes as well as share those of the district. It will be a celebration within a celebration!

And wait! There is even more exciting news! We have plans in the works to start the weekend off with several exciting options. On Saturday, June 25, there are plans in the work for your choice of a hike, a bike ride, or a dodgeball game. Message from Former Governor Gregoire
On behalf of Challenge Seattle and Microsoft, we want to thank you for your participation in the Welcome Back Seattle-Love, Seatown series of “block parties” May 18-20. This was the launch of both the Mayor’s Day of Service on 5/21, and Jon Scholes and the Downtown Seattle Association team’s Love, Seatown series of events.
We realize that the recovery of Seattle from COVID will take time, but this launch was just what we needed. Residents, employees, and businesses want the pre-COVID Seattle back, as shown by the turnout at the Day of Service. While we work on the challenges all major cities are facing, we can succeed with our enthusiasm and commitment to community.
Thanks for your contribution to the “block parties.” We look forward to a thriving Seattle with your continuing help.
