The Holiday Spirit: Reveling in our Differences and Affirming our Shared Ideals with Rabbi Daniel Weiner
December 4th at Noon
The Westin, 1900 5th Avenue
Senior Rabbi Daniel Weiner believes passionately in building Judaism for the 21st century and in healing the world through social justice. Weiner and his team won the Religion Action Center’s Fain Award for their campaign on gun responsibility. His efforts with other clergy contributed to the founding of the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility which drafted and helped pass Initiative 594 in 2014. This measure was designed to require background checks to be run on every person purchasing a gun in the state of Washington, even those who do so via private sales. Work on implementation of the law and about gun responsibility continues.
Rabbi Weiner's columns have appeared in The Seattle Times, Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Haaretz. Weiner wrote Good God: Faith for the Rest of Us about the dangerous polarization between fanatical faith and soulless secularism.
Transforming the world through positive action, from kindness to climate change, was the focus of comments by Giovanna Mingarelli, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of two international companies: M&C Consulting and MC2. She started with questions to the audience about ‘service’ and how many had done an act of service today, or during the last two days, or last week. Not surprisingly, the audience of Rotarians did very well! “We want to quantify, celebrate and share with others ambitious goals,” she said, “with more than one trillion hours of good intentions that go unrewarded or noticed.” Her remarks included how 350 million trees were planted in 12 hours in Ethiopia and how 220 million trees were planted in India as examples of quantifiable or social proof these activities happen.
As Rotarians, we are leaders connecting for extraordinary good –both in our community and around the world. Together we are eradicating polio and malaria, bringing fresh water to rural villages worldwide to stop the spread of disease, and helping our neighbors in need with housing, healthy foods, and educational opportunities.
Once a year we ask you to fulfill your membership obligations and take action by making two gifts that will transform our world. One is to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF). The other is to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Thank you for taking action now to help our club have a powerful and positive impact on our world.
