Philip Welkhoff: Defeating Malaria
October 9th at Noon
Grand Hyatt, 721 Pine Street
Every two minutes, a child dies of malaria. And each year, more than 200 million new cases of the disease are reported. Although countries have dramatically reduced the total number of malaria cases and deaths since 2000, progress in recent years has stalled. Worryingly, in some countries, malaria is on the rise.
Philip Welkhoff is the Malaria Program Director at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Previously, he served as Director of Research at the Institute for Disease Modeling. There, he helped develop computer simulations of malaria, polio, and other disease transmission dynamics to assist public health professionals and other scientists in planning the eradication of different diseases.
Philip will explain the scope of malaria’s deadly impact, the challenges in its elimination, and what is being done across the globe to eradicate the greatest killer of mankind.
Wednesday, October 9 11:30 am-12:15 pm and 1:30 pm-1:45 pm @ the Grand Hyatt
Seattle #4's membership, service, and programs committees will be featured at the October 9th luncheon. Drop by before or after the program to learn more about each committee's mission, meeting schedule, and how to get involved!
On National Coffee with a Cop Day, we upped the game by having Lunch with a Police Chief. Seattle Police Department Chief, Carmen Best, was our guest speaker who candidly shared the joys and concerns of being Police Chief in a major U.S. city. A 28 year Seattle Police Department (SPD) veteran, Chief Best opined that the two most important qualities to make a good officer are hard work (“100% work 100% of the time”) and an innate commitment to serve. The Chief explained that many calls are, at the core, officers responding to people in need. Officers provide services to those experiencing domestic violence, addiction, sexual assaults and homelessness. She acknowledged there are times when the job entails arrests or dangerous situations but, more often, the job requires helping the community. She said being an officer is more than a job, it's really a calling.

Cynthia Chirot, Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF) Grants Committee member, hosted Seattle 4’s second Table Talk at the September 4th luncheon. This time around, Rotarians were asked to provide feedback for the use of the SRSF’s $40,000 grant – options included Seattle issues such as homelessness and its contributing factors, sex trafficking, and climate change. Homelessness and its many causes, particularly mental illness and drug addiction, was the choice of the large majority of members. The SRSF Grants Committee will be conducting further interviews with experts within Rotary and in the community. Please contact any member of the SRSF board for feedback or to get involved and stay tuned!
District Governor Elect and Seattle 4 Rotary Past President, Cathy Gibson, will be leading a Seattle Rotary delegation to the centennial celebration of the Rotary Club of Shanghai which the Rotary Club of Seattle sponsored in 1919. Members of the Rotary Club of Seattle are welcome to join the delegation. Please let Executive Director, Caroline Bobanick (caroline@seattlerotary.org), know by October 7th if you plan to join the delegation so that we may provide a complete list of delegates to the Rotary Club of Shanghai.

In Memoriam
John Blackman, founder of Argosy Cruises and Seattle 4 member from 1990-2018, passed peacefully at his Rancho Mirage home surrounded by his wife Anna and family. It was shared that in his final days your cards, notes, emails and texts provided great comfort to not only him, but to the family members that were present. John touched so many lives through his work, philanthropy and industry connections and will be missed.
