Rob Dunlop, Cascade PBS
Cascade PBS is the premiere regional public media organization offering the best of public broadcasting, local original productions, public interest journalism and community events. Our mission is to inform and inspire the community to make the world a better place. Join us to learn about the latest from PBS; the local programs we produce, such as Mossback’s Northwest, Nick on the Rocks and Out & Back; and the latest in our coverage of local politics and investigative journalism.
Rotarians gathered on April 17th for a panel discussion regarding the increasing ties between the Pacific Northwest and South Asia. Panelists included Consular General of India Prakash Gupta, Dr. Radhika Govindrajan of the University of Washington, and Professor Sital Kalantry, JD of the Seattle University School of Law with Mark Gantar facilitating the panel discussion.
Panelists covered a variety of different topics such as cultural exchanges, trans-pacific economic trade, and cross border education programs. Speaking to the most recent economic data, CG Prakash shared how India recently posted an annualized GDP growth rate of 8.4% with investments from companies such as Boeing to deliver 200 planes over the next several years, highlighting the connection between the Pacific Northwest and India. Professor Kalantry followed this up by sharing that Indian and US relations are at an all-time high and carried on that bilateral trade between the countries in 2022 was at $133 billion, with the US being India’s largest trading partner for that year.
Dr. Govindrajan shared how locally, programs through the University of Washington have been established to teach the Pacific Northwest community South Asian languages including Urdu, Hindi, and many others. These programs connect the Pacific Northwest to South Asia through cultural exchanges as well as assist healthcare providers through learning languages in an expedited manner.
Young Professionals Exchange Program Application Submission Opens May 5-May 15
YPE is a Rotary Club program designed for young professionals ages 25 – 35. The purpose is to build a new generation of Rotarian global leaders with global perspectives and experience.
For a period of 8 – 10 days, you will be part of a small group of other young professionals and will travel to Japan, where you will be hosted by a Rotary club. You will stay in a Japanese home of a Rotarian club member who has volunteered to host you. During your time in Japan, you will take part in various activities as a group (in 2019 and 2023, it was a group of 4). In 2024 it will, take place in Osaka from either September 13 or 20. Similarly, there is a group of young professionals from Japan who will visit the Seattle area, hosted by 5 Rotary Clubs in the Seattle area who are hosting the same activities. In 2024, that will happen August 10 - 18.

You will start the day at our Olympic campus with a warm beverage and light snacks, including the world's best banana bread. You’ll have time to meet your fellow day adventurers while packing your lunchtime sandwich as we introduce NatureBridge and the Elwha River. Then we head out into the field to research sites on the Elwha where we will learn about the Elwha River, the impact of the dam in our local community and around the world! Please bring your own water, wear comfortable walking shoes and layers for the weather. The program will conclude on the Elwha River.
