Members are invited to send in short videos (up to 2 minutes) or pictures sharing what you are doing to create moments of hope and joy in the midst of the pandemic. ONLINE PROGRAM March 25th at Noon
Revisiting Servant Leadership with Howard Behar
This video will be released on our YouTube channel at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, March 25th. Keep an eye out for an email early next week with a link that will take you directly to the video.
Join us next week for another online program featuring an inspiration from member, Jaime Mendez, and remarks from President Kim as well as a gem among our recently recorded speakers – Howard Behar. His inspiring words on the importance of good leadership and putting people first are particularly fitting during these trying times. After the video presentation, join our online discussion with fellow members on the meaning of servant leadership and how we best practice Service Above Self. Member Jan Levy, former executive director of Leadership Tomorrow, will kick off our Table Talks.
If you ask Howard Behar what defines a great leader, he’ll tell you great leaders serve. That doesn’t mean they are subservient or weak. It simply means they’re motivated by a genuine compassion for people. In other words, they care deeply about their employees and customers, and they act accordingly.
Howard’s career in business spans more than 50 years, all in consumer-oriented businesses covering several industries. He retired from Starbucks Coffee after 21 years where he led both the domestic business, as President of North America, and was the founding President of Starbucks International. During his tenure, he participated in the growth of the company from 28 stores to more than 15,000 stores spanning five continents. He served on the Starbucks Board of Directors for 12 years before retiring. He has authored two books on leadership titled It’s Not About the Coffee and The Magic Cup.
ZOOM Post-Program Table Talks Discussion on Servant Leadership
Following the video, we will be hosting an online discussion from 12:40-1:00 pm aimed at giving members the opportunity to connect despite our “social distancing.” Our topic will be leadership and member, Jan Levy, will kick off the discussion with opening remarks.

Food Packing Help Needed
A Message from Harvest Against Hunger, a Program of Rotary District 5030
Tuesdays from 10:00am-Noon and 1:00-3:00pm
As many of you know, response to COVID-19 and its impact on the most vulnerable people in our community has been dramatic. Many of our food bank partners have been forced to change their models in order to safely provide food to clients.
One of the most dramatic changes is the need to distribute food in pre-sorted boxes. Volunteers are critically needed to help prepare boxes that can be sent to a number of hunger relief sites, including some new ad-hoc community distribution services.
Our partners at Northwest Harvest have introduced new volunteer shifts on Tuesdays (10:00 AM to Noon and 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM) at their Kent warehouse. Groups will be limited to a maximum of 30, with 10 people per room to ensure safe social distancing.
Harvest Against Hunger, a program of our Rotary district, is working with our partners across Washington, including the Washington State Department of Agriculture, to develop plans and best practices for hunger relief efforts. To learn more and find out how you can get involved, visit the new COVID-19 Response page on the Harvest Against Hunger website.
The next time you’re at the grocery store stocking up your pantry, consider grabbing a few extra items to donate to Northwest Harvest. Find a list of their public drop sites HERE.
