Demise of Journalism = The Demise of Democracy

Former Seattle Times columnist Joni Balter and former KING 5 news anchor Mark Wright exchanged thoughts about the future of journalism before the Seattle Rotary Club #4 on Wednesday, March 6, 2024.

Prior to their joint appearance, Joni Balter set the stage by suggesting Rotarians ponder two questions. How many read or listen to one or more local news sources every day? How many of you read or hear something almost daily that makes you worried about the future of our country? Many hands were raised.

Joni said that we are facing the collapse of the news industry and its business models. She said this is happening at a time that we have an increasing need for objective information. Since 2005, the US has lost a third of its newspapers and two thirds of its news journalists. Misinformation thrives. On the plus side, there has been the emergence of hundreds of local digital sites, heavily focused on local coverage. She said we are fortunate to have the Seattle Times fighting hard for survival.

Joni applauded public radio stations and the Cascadia Daily News among others. A new digital daily print weekly newspaper in Bellingham is led by Ron Judd, a former Seattle Times reporter.

Joni sighted a Gallup Poll that asked people: “Where do you get your news?” Nearly half said it is on social media. She quipped that we should all start following Taylor Swift on X to see what's really going on.

Making Rotary Simply Irresistable

What does it take to make a Rotary club "simply irresistable"? It's a question pondered by Rotary International and at the local level at our club as well as several club members have been involved in strategic planning this year as part of the Future Vision Task Force.

SRSF Giving Update

As you know, your SRSF Board has been reaching out to those who have not yet donated to the campaign for many reasons. We’re happy to share that this effort has increased the participation of our members to 54% of our Club, and we are at nearly 70% of our $250,000 goal.  We have less than $80,000 to go!

Thanks to all of our recent donors.  We so appreciate what you are doing to help the work done by our Service Committees.

The outreach will continue for a few more weeks and we are hopeful that our goals will be met. Thanks in advance for additional donors that come in during this time.

The three finalists all had outstanding projects and we want to congratulate WA-BLOC and CENTS for being part of the top 3.

Overall, we had 27 applications so it was a tough competition. We will align all of these organizations with our Service Committees to see how we can support their projects in the future.

Elwha River Exploration Day!

Walk in the footsteps of NatureBridge students as you explore Elwha River restoration and its history with NatureBridge. We’ll utilize hands-on field science practices to help you understand biodiversity and ecological health, and how the ecosystem is changing post-dam removal.

You will start the day at our Olympic campus with a warm beverage and light snacks, including the world's best banana bread. You’ll have time to meet your fellow day adventurers while packing your lunchtime sandwich as we introduce NatureBridge and the Elwha River. Then we head out into the field to research sites on the Elwha where we will learn about the Elwha River, the impact of the dam in our local community and around the world! Please bring your own water, wear comfortable walking shoes and layers for the weather. The program will conclude on the Elwha River.

Registration is $10 and space is limited!

We hope you’ll join us for this fun and inspirational day!
