Meet Brian Baird

It is my distinct pleasure to introduce Dr. Brian Baird, who joins us as President of Antioch University Seattle.  Proposed by Anna Liotta. When I first met Brian at Antioch (located near the rotating pink elephant) I wasn’t sure how to address him because of all of his accomplishments—Mr. Baird.  President Baird.  Doctor Baird.  But right away, he affably petitioned me to just call him “Brian”.

Brian was a six-term Congressman from the 3rd Congressional District of Southwest Washington.  This quintessential swing district includes Lewis County on the far right and the Evergreen State College on the other side. When asked how he managed to get re-elected 5 times in such a diverse district, he matter-of-factly answered:  1) you hold over 300 town halls, 2) listen to your constituents, and 3) learn how to work across the aisle. But it might have also had something to do with the fact that he was voted “Funniest Celebrity in Washington DC” for his standup comedy and impersonation of President George W. Bush in ’05.  Or when he went toe-to-toe with Stephen Colbert in Colbert’s “Better Know a Congressman” feature.  But, it wasn’t all stand-up comedy and satirist TV for Brian.  His work in DC focused on promoting ethical conduct, like introducing the Stock Act, which prohibited members of congress from profiting from insider trading.

He stated very astutely that it would serve our country well if Congress would start every session with acknowledgement of the Rotary 4 way test:  1) Is it the Truth? 2) Is it Fair?  3) Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?  4) Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?  Indeed. He also wrote the legislation to reinstate the deduction of state sales tax on the federal return for Washington residents--saving over $5 Billion since it was enacted, and he chaired the Subcommittee on Energy and Environment, where he focused his time on ocean acidification.  In addition to his work in Congress, Brian holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.  His clinical experience spans more than two decades. He’s authored three books and previously chaired the Department of Psychology at PLU.

When the President’s post at Antioch opened up, Brian jumped at the chance to combine his passions for academics, science, and community. What attracted Brian to Antioch is its deep roots in social justice.  From its inception in the mid 1800s, racial and gender equality, and independent thinking were integral parts of Antioch. Brian is happily married to the brilliant Rachel Nugent, an economist specializing in global health.  Together, they live in Edmonds with their 9-year-old twin boys. They’re avid skiiers, divers, campers, and sea kayakers.
