First up today is Dr. Lina Kim, who owns her own dental practice with offices in Laurelhurst and Magnolia. Lina was proposed by Faith Ireland and Paula Houston. When I interview new members, I like to find out what they are passionate about.  It’s very clear that Lina’s passion is her family.  She started right out telling me about her husband, Steven, a prosecuting attorney who just finished a one-year stint working as an attorney in South Korea. Their son, Hugo, got to stay in Korea with his dad, and Lina and her daughter, Hailey, got to visit there four times. Now, as a result of that, the children are able to speak Korean in the household, and in our increasingly global world, that’s a great way to prepare kids for the future.  Lina told me about her mother, who now lives in Bellevue, and her sister, who is a Presbyterian minister in California.

Lina is passionate about children.  Before she started her practice, she wanted to do a residency in children's dentistry, but as we all know, life has a tendency of getting in the way (“if you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans.”) Lina volunteers to teach oral health care to children of indigent parents, she teaches Sunday school at her church, and contributes time to such organizations as Give Kids a Smile and the Washington Oral Health Foundation. Lina is a Husky, and also a graduate of the UW School of Dentistry. Welcome, Lina!

Next up is Lauren Domino, the development director for the Seattle Shakespeare Company.  Lauren was proposed by Grace Chien and Dorothy Bullitt.  Lauren is also a Husky, with BA in drama and a masters in public administration.  Lauren has a number of passions, starting with the Girl Scouts.  Growing up in scouting, and in fact her gold award project, an after school theater program for children completed while she was in high school, led to her receiving an internship with Seattle Children’s Theater.  She continues as a volunteer in numerous capacities, including as a national delegate for Girl Scouts of Western Washington.  She previously served as a board member of Rain City Rock camp for girls and is currently a board member and treasurer of Arts-Ed Washington.

She’s also passionate about improv. She was previously the education director for Wing-It productions, which many of you may know from one of their activities, Jet City Improv, and she continues as a performer with them.  In fact, doing improv in college is how she met her husband, Andy, who works in social media at Amazon.  He also continues to perform improv, but due to non-compete clauses between his improv troupe and hers, the two of them are contractually not allowed to perform on stage together.  Go figure. As if that’s not enough, Lauren and Andy and others are partners in Olympia coffee, a boutique coffee roasting company.   Their company was just named the 2013 micro roaster of the year by Roast Magazine.  Welcome, Lauren!
