J. Lennox Scott and the Seattle Real Estate Market: The Correction, the Recovery, and What's Next
November 13th at Noon
The Westin, 1900 Fifth Avenue
Home prices in the Seattle metro area have risen steadily in recent years, usually outpacing the national average. However, a recent Seattle home price forecast offered a different picture, suggesting that house values could drop slightly over the course of the next year. According to this same source, house values have declined by 4.5% over the most recent 12-month period. Is it time to start worrying about the housing market again?
Lennox Scott is the third-generation Chairman and CEO of John L. Scott Real Estate founded in 1931 by his grandfather in Seattle. He is very involved with the National Association of Realtors as past Chair of both the Large Residential Firms Advisory Group and NAR Research Committee. Lennox has been recognized by Realtor Magazine as one of the Top 25 Most Influential Real Estate Brokers in the nation.
Author, speaker and family physician, John Crocker, shared his observations and experiences with wild chimpanzees that were inspired by his mentor -- well known English primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall. “Chimp behavior was an adventure in itself learning chimp behavior right up close in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park for eight months,” he began. “Short of having the ability to speak, the DNA of chimpanzees is only 2% different than humans.”
As a Stanford undergraduate, Dr. Crocker took a year off to join Jane Goodall and live and learn from chimpanzees. “Before I left, I agreed to ‘babysit’ an orphaned chimp named Baboo. Carrying a backpack of bottles, bananas and pampers, I took Baboo on outings as he grew to depend on me, not unlike other primates developing a mother-infant relationship,” he said. “Ironically, as my adventure in Tanzania was to begin Baboo went off to Stanford’s primate center while I went to Africa to learn more about chimps.”
As Rotarians, we are leaders connecting for extraordinary good –both in our community and around the world. Together we are eradicating polio and malaria, bringing fresh water to rural villages worldwide to stop the spread of disease, and helping our neighbors in need with housing, healthy foods, and educational opportunities.
Once a year we ask you to fulfill your membership obligations and take action by making two gifts that will transform our world. One is to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF). The other is to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Thank you for taking action now to help our club have a powerful and positive impact on our world.
This is a special meeting for those who have read So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. Many who attended the Peacebuilders first dynamic discussion led by Paula Houston asked for more time to read the book.
Notice to the Membership:
Proposed Bylaws Changes Vote - December 4th Meeting
The board is recommending a change to the current club bylaws. The proposed changes are driven by a strategic decision for a greater emphasis on membership recruitment and retention including the establishment of a second Vice President level board position focused in this area.

Large Grant Update
SRSF has sent out a request for proposals to organizations that work with the chronically homeless in Seattle, especially individuals who deal with substance abuse and mental illness. As previously reported in the Totem, this topic was selected for the $40,000 grant after results from our September Table Talk. Proposals are due in early December and the decision will be made in January.
