Joni Balter in Conversation with Mark Wright

Threats to local journalism: the dysfunctional, news business model collides with an ever increasing need for access to objectively true information. The fate of civil discourse -- indeed, democracy -- lies in the balance. A conversation with journalists Joni Balter and Mark Wright.

UW President Ana Mari Cauce

Rotarians gathered on February 21st to hear University of Washington President Ana Mari Cauce speak on the problems facing the higher education, Washingtonians, and the World as a whole and what UW has done and continues to do to address these. Cauce shared how UW is working directly to address challenges while also setting up a foundation to address these problems together as a city and an academic community.

Highlighting the connection between UW the community at large Cauce provided examples of students, faculty, and community members working to build upon the idea of a “University FOR Washington; and not just of Washington.” Cauce highlighted this point by sharing the story of the 1930s UW rowing team that served as the inspiration for the book and film, The Boys in the Boat. After qualifying for the 1936 Olympics the team was not able to afford the costs to travel to the games and the Seattle Times organized a donation campaign to send the team to the Olympic. A team that came together as one and was then aided by the community that similarly came together as one to send the team to the Olympics. Additionally, Cauce shared how recently UW quarterback Michael Penix Jr. demonstrated the idea of coming together as one during the 2023 football season. Cauce shared how at the December 2023 Heisman Trophy ceremony Penix Jr. displayed the interior of his jacket which was emblazoned with the names of his football teammates, further demonstrating the idea of a team coming together.

Volunteers Needed!

The Boys & Girls Club is looking for reading mentors for three of their local area clubs. They are looking for volunteers that can read with one child twice a week for an hour. They would LOVE Rotarians to sign up for this program as it is effective in bringing K-4th grade students to reading at grade level in 10 weeks! To volunteer, CLICK HERE.

SRSF Giving Update

Our SRSF 2023-2024 has officially ended.  A hearty “thanks” to those of you who did support our campaign and ultimately, our service committees.

As of today, we had 51% of our members participate for a total of $146,616.  Both fall far short of our original goals of 100% participation and $250,000.

The good news is that you can still provide your gift to the foundation.  Here are the links to the SRSF and TRF sites.

With Appreciation,

Your Seattle Rotary Service Foundation Board of Directors

Elwha River Exploration Day!

Walk in the footsteps of NatureBridge students as you explore Elwha River restoration and its history with NatureBridge. We’ll utilize hands-on field science practices to help you understand biodiversity and ecological health, and how the ecosystem is changing post-dam removal.

You will start the day at our Olympic campus with a warm beverage and light snacks, including the world's best banana bread. You’ll have time to meet your fellow day adventurers while packing your lunchtime sandwich as we introduce NatureBridge and the Elwha River. Then we head out into the field to research sites on the Elwha where we will learn about the Elwha River, the impact of the dam in our local community and around the world! Please bring your own water, wear comfortable walking shoes and layers for the weather. The program will conclude on the Elwha River.

Registration is $10 and space is limited!

We hope you’ll join us for this fun and inspirational day!
