Tom Burt, Cyber Security for the Defense of Democracy and Cyber-Diplomacy
October 30th at Noon
The Four Seasons, 99 Union St.
Nation-state attacks are more common than you think, and patterns suggest elections and democracies are at risk. Tom Burt will share updates on what Microsoft has been doing to help protect candidates and the election ecosystem. Globally, we need better policies and solutions. To that end, Microsoft is leading change and working with governments, industry and civil society to come together to collaborate on solutions to these issues. Tom will share progress on these commitments and what we can do together to protect the hopes technology offers against the very real threats it also presents.
Tom Burt has been with Microsoft since 1995 and currently serves as Corporate Vice President of Customer Security and Trust He leads a cross-disciplinary team of engineers, lawyers, policy advocates, project managers, business professionals, data analysts, and cybercrime investigators to drive continuous improvement of customer security in Microsoft products and online services.

Beth Knox introduced JJ McKay, publisher of The Fresh Toast, a contemporary media firm.
Although JJ prefers vodka as his drug of choice, he develops digital content about cannabis. His platform helps consumers, as well as doctors, understand marijuana and its uses. Cannabis is no longer carrying the same stigma it once did, and now more are willing to prescribe it. Until federal legalization happens, however, cannabis is not covered by insurance and not covered by malpractice.
Who supports it? Republicans, Millennials (citing that alcohol is harder on your system than cannabis) and people who want to make money. Of course, we need to keep it away from kids.
Alcohol, porn, tobacco, and cannabis are considered the four great sin industries. The market size for the big four today are cannabis $9.7 billion, alcohol $223 billion, tobacco $80 billion, and porn $25 billion. By 2030, cannabis is expected to be a $50 billion industry and CBD is branching off from cannabis to form a large industry of its own.
In less than three minutes, we will welcome officially not only our newest, but notably, our youngest member. Yes, Mike O’Brien is precisely one-quarter the age of our oldest active member. If the three pillars of a life successfully lived are defined as - learning, earning, and serving well, then Mike is well, well on his way to just that at a tender age.
As Rotarians, we are leaders connecting for extraordinary good –both in our community and around the world. Together we are eradicating polio and malaria, bringing fresh water to rural villages worldwide to stop the spread of disease, and helping our neighbors in need with housing, healthy foods, and educational opportunities.
Once a year we ask you to fulfill your membership obligations and take action by making two gifts that will transform our world. One is to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF). The other is to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Thank you for taking action now to help our club have a powerful and positive impact on our world.
Past President Cathy Gibson traveled to Shanghai this month to present Shanghai Rotary Club President Terri Lau with a certificate noting Seattle #4’s gift to Rotary Peace Centers in honor of the RC Shanghai Centennial. Seattle Rotary sponsored the Shanghai Club's founding as the first Rotary Club in China 100 years ago.
