From Kindness to Climate Change: Transforming the World through Positive Action
November 20th at Noon
The Renaissance, 515 Madison Street
There are one trillion hours of human good intentions that go untapped every year. Recent studies show Millennials, people ages 18-35, are the most likely to take action to help one another or support a cause they care about. Volunteerism is experiencing a paradigm shift in how these young people contribute to their favorite causes, with an unprecedented increase in the use of social media and text messaging to show their support.
Giovanna Mingarelli is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of two international companies:M&C ConsultingandMC2. Her reach extends from northern Canada to Washington, D.C. to the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Giovanna is an avid contributor and speaker at events and conferences relating to Millennial leadership, crowdsourced social action and the gamification of politics and business. For this work, she has been cited by Harvard Business Review and Forbes, and is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post. In 2015, she was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network (WXN).
Jeff Pyatt introduced our main speaker, Lennox Scott, the 40-year Chairman and CEO of John L. Scott, which has grown to become one of the top 20 residential real estate brands in the nation. Lennox was last at our podium in 2011 as we were coming out of the great recession. He shared his early memory of learning a leadership lesson as a Boy Scout: "do your job so we don't let the team down; we all have our place so the team can excel."
He reminded us that he called out the bottom of the market in 2011 and since then there has been incredible growth: "We have seen decades worth in one decade." But he mentioned the problem of having a shortage of affordable housing as we have seen the median home price more than double in King and some surrounding counties and we are now seeing "an exploding market in Kitsap County."
It is my pleasure to introduce to you Mike Hatzenbeler, President and CEO of PROVAIL, formerly known as United Cerebral Palsy of King-Snohomish counties. His classification is Human & Community Services. He was proposed by Heather Fitzpatrick and Seconded by Gene Boes.
As Rotarians, we are leaders connecting for extraordinary good –both in our community and around the world. Together we are eradicating polio and malaria, bringing fresh water to rural villages worldwide to stop the spread of disease, and helping our neighbors in need with housing, healthy foods, and educational opportunities.
Once a year we ask you to fulfill your membership obligations and take action by making two gifts that will transform our world. One is to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF). The other is to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Thank you for taking action now to help our club have a powerful and positive impact on our world.
