Harvest Against Hunger is looking for volunteers to help in harvesting thousands of pounds of apples from Ringsrud orchard in Cashmere, WA on Saturday, October 19th. Our friends at Upper Valley M.E.N.D. contacted Rotary First Harvest to help them rescue fruit from several acres of beautiful apple trees that were not picked due to market conditions. Last year volunteers gleaned 20,000 pounds of apples. The orchardists estimate that this year, there may be as much as 35,000 pounds of apples available. The glean is scheduled for 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and at least 30 volunteers are needed to get the job done. Harvest Against Hunger is partnering with local apple warehouses and our friends at Northwest Harvest to get picking bags, ladders and bins for our volunteers, but ask that you plan to bring gloves, a water bottle, snacks and weather-appropriate clothing. |

Cannabis: A Fast Growing Industry Investors and States are High OnIn the last five years, marijuana has been legalized in 33 states and has generated $750 million in revenue. The $10 billion legal marijuana industry is growing alongside the CBD industry, with each expected to be a $40 billion industry by 2030. Constellation, Altria, Scott’s Miracle Grow, the Pritzker family and more have invested. It seems everyone wants to ride the “high” tide of the market, but there are warning signs for companies. This week, JJ McKay will provide his insight on the legal marijuana and CBD industry. With a rich history in consumer appetites, JJ McKay has worked on programs with companies that include Costco and the American Heart Association. In 2016, McKay founded The Fresh Toast, a media content company and lifestyle & health platform with a side of cannabis. It is an award-winning digital leader for the industry. |

Now that we've all had some time to reflect on Jeff Robinson's powerful presentation about racism in America, your Peacebuilders Committee invites you to continue our journey exploring race, racism, and how they infect almost every aspect of American life with your fellow Seattle 4 Rotary members. At 11 am before the luncheon on Wed. October 30, we'll be holding a group discussion around Seattle author and activist Ijeoma Oluo's book, "So You Want to Talk About Race?" which delves into subjects ranging from intersectionality to affirmative action to “model minorities.” Together we can have an honest conversation and help each other navigate the questions of race that arise in our daily lives. Come even if you haven’t read the book yet. Facilitating our discussion will be Seattle Rotary's own Paula Houston and leading the meeting on behalf of the Peacebuilders Committee will be Roberta Nestaas. This event is brought to you by the Peace Builder Committee of Seattle #4 Rotary and Seattle City Rotaract. Both of these organizations have directly supported REST and are excited to see where our donations are going! Seattle #4 Rotary Peacebuilder Committee put forward a $500 Assistant Governor Grant to purchase red jackets for the social workers who do outreach to prostituted individuals on North Aurora. Seattle City Rotaract organized a drive to stock the REST Drop-In Center with feminine hygeine products. Please join us for a site visit of the REST Drop-In Center and a FAQ with Engagement Director Julie McNamara-Dahl. The REST Drop-In Center provides a safe space to rest, connect with other survivors, build a community of support, and get assistance in accessing resources like housing, employment, education, transportation, and our newly launched Integrated Health Clinic. The Drop-In Center is open four days a week, and guests have access to food, including a hot dinner served nightly, quiet and relaxing spaces, and the resource closet where they can pick up clothes, hygiene items, and other necessities. Rotarians and Rotaractors will be visiting the Drop-In Center on an evening when it's not serving survivors, a Friday night. Due to the tight quarters, the maximum head count for this event is 20. The tour and FAQ will last about 75 minutes. Immediately afterwards we'll adjourn to dinner at a nearby restaurant, for those who are interested. We hope to see you there!! The Seattle Real Estate Market: The Correction, the Recovery, and What's NextHome prices in the Seattle metro area have risen steadily in recent years, usually outpacing the national average. However, a recent Seattle home price forecast offered a different picture, suggesting that house values could drop slightly over the course of the next year. According to this same source, house values have declined by 4.5% over the most recent 12-month period. Is it time to start worrying about the housing market again? The Holiday Spirit: Reveling in Our Differences and Affirming Our Shared IdealsSenior Rabbi Daniel Weiner believes passionately in building Judaism for the 21st century and in healing the world through social justice. Weiner and his team won the Religion Action Center’s Fain Award for their campaign on gun responsibility. His efforts with other clergy contributed to the founding of the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility, which drafted and helped pass Initiative 594 in 2014. This measure was designed to require background checks to be run on every person purchasing a gun in the state of Washington, even those who do so via private sales. Work on implementation of the law and about gun responsibility continues. Rabbi Weiner's columns have appeared in The Seattle Times, Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Haaretz. Each year the Rotary Community Service Committee, in conjunction with the Rotary Boys & Girls Club, creates a wonderful opportunity for all Rotarians and their friends and families to take a deserving, less-fortunate child on a holiday shopping outing. All of the children are from the Rotary Boys & Girls Club and are selected for the program on the basis of need. The idea is simple: on one day in December, volunteers who are willing to donate and spend their own money are paired with a child (typically ages 6-16) and accompany them on a 1-3 hour shopping excursion in downtown Seattle. Typical destinations are Macy’s, Old Navy, Nordstrom Rack, or other stores that may have what each particular child needs (within the $200 spending limit). Meeting at the Club at 19th and Spruce in South Capitol Hill, transportation is provided to and from the downtown shopping core. Many volunteers, who often bring members of their own family to participate, have included lunch with the child as well (no obligation, of course). This event is a wonderful way to help a child in need during the holidays. Our meeting/departure times will be between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. Vans from the club will depart approximately every 15-20 minutes from the club and will rotate between the club and our drop-off/pick-up point at or near the Convention Center. Our last pick-up from downtown back to the club will be at 3:00 pm. Please contact Joel Ferrell as soon as possible if you are able to join us this year. We have a limit of 40 pairings available and last year we had to establish a waitlist! Please provide a meeting time that works for you, any age/gender preference, as well as a cell phone number in case we need to contact you while you are shopping. |

Following the success of our recent Peacebuilders Book Discussion of “So You Want to Talk About Race" by local author and activist Ijeoma Oluo, we’re excited to announce your Seattle 4 Rotary Peacebuilders Committee is continuing our journey towards antiracism. This February, please join us in reading “White Fragility” by local author and UW Professor Robin Diangelo. It’s a New York Times best-selling book, exploring how racism as a practice is not restricted to ‘bad people’ and the counterproductive reactions even the best-meaning people can have when their assumptions about race are challenged. Facilitating our book discussion will be Seattle Rotary's own Paula Houston. The discussion will be held at 11am before the luncheon on Wed. Feb. 26, either in the Motif hotel or at a nearby location (TBD). Your Peacebuilders Committee invites all Seattle 4 Rotary members to join us in this read and discussion. Copies of the book can be obtained at all the regular locations: |

Building a Vision for the 21st Century Creative CityChristina Scheppelmann, an arts administrator with experience in the US, European, and Middle East markets, is now the Seattle Opera’s fourth general director. Seattle is a world-class city that celebrates the arts. Its creative spirit is inspired not only by its artists and cultural institutions, but also by its vast technology community which employs writers, designers, and web developers. However, this growth is in danger, especially in the arts sector which is a people-driven business. Christina will speak about what we need to have a world-class artistic city and our collective responsibility to artists to make that a reality. |

While our in-person meetings are suspended due to the State of Emergency in Washington, our club leaders are hard at work finding ways for Seattle 4 Rotary to continue to provide quality programming and opportunities for connection for our members. We are excited to present an online program in lieu of our March 18th luncheon. This video will be released on our YouTube and Facebook pages at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, March 18th. Right now, at this moment, while all of our lives have turned upside down and inside out, it may seem impossible to look at something like the coronavirus pandemic and see anything but catastrophe. Yet, the human capacity to rise above, even in the most difficult of times, always has a way of shining through. We all face difficulties, not to be destroyed by them, but to help rediscover ourselves and extract the inner strength we are often unaware of having. During Wednesday’s virtual Rotary program, fellow Seattle 4 Rotarian, Rais Bhuiyan will share his experiences and inspiration as we navigate through this incredibly uncertain and frightening time together.
Shot by a white supremacist ten days after 9/11, Rais Bhuiyan not only survived this brutal hate crime, he went on to forgive his assailant and worked tirelessly to try and save him from death row. Rais later created the non-profit, World Without Hate (WWH), the manifestation of his death-bed promise, dedicating his life to disrupting hate and violence through storytelling and empathy education. To date, Rais has engaged with more than 250,000 people globally, from classrooms, college campuses, maximum-security prisons, refugee camps, religious forums, to town halls, city councils, and conferences. Join us for an online program featuring a gem among our recent speakers – Howard Behar. His inspiring words on the importance of good leadership and putting people first are particularly fitting during these trying times. This video program will be released on our YouTube page at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, March 25. If you ask Howard Behar what defines a great leader, he’ll tell you great leaders serve. That doesn’t mean they are subservient or weak. It simply means they’re motivated by a genuine compassion for people. In other words, they care deeply about their employees and customers, and they act accordingly. Howard’s career in business spans more than 50 years, all in consumer-oriented businesses covering several industries. He retired from Starbucks Coffee after 21 years where he led both the domestic business, as President of North America, and was the founding President of Starbucks International. During his tenure, he participated in the growth of the company from 28 stores to more than 15,000 stores spanning five continents. He served on the Starbucks Board of Directors for 12 years before retiring. |
