Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in AmericaOn August 21 the Rotary Club of Seattle will be hosting a special afternoon program featuring a community discussion with speaker Jeff Robinson at Town Hall Seattle. For over three decades, attorney (and now ACLU Deputy Legal Director) Jeffery Robinson has devoted his career to racial justice. In recent years, he has traveled the country speaking hard truths about race in America. “Our history,” he tells audiences, “has been stolen from us.” Weaving heartbreak, humor, passion, and rage, Robinson takes us through this stolen history, showing us how the legacy of slavery and U.S. imperialism impacts every aspect of our society. The history Robinson imparts is not easy. It is not comfortable. But it is necessary. In the end, Robinson’s words are a call to arms. He empowers his audience to change the future, leaving them with a sense of optimism about what America could look like if we have the courage to change it. Learn more about Jeff Robinson and his work: Seattle Rotary members (and one guest) do not need to register for this event. THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT FOR GUESTS AND VISITING ROTARIANS Doors open at 3:00 pm and the program will begin promptly at 4:00 pm. |

NASA's Apollo ProgramFifty years ago, James Joki, a 26 year-old Boeing engineer, was in Mission Control for Apollo 11’s moon landing. Serving as an extravehicular mobility unit flight controller, Joki helped develop, test and modify the spacesuits, backpacks, visors, gloves and oxygen system that Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong would rely on for life support during their walk on the moon. His role was critical from the time Aldrin and Armstrong donned their suits and opened the door of the lunar module, to the moment they returned safely to the spacecraft and shut the door. Join us in welcoming Dr. James Joki, a graduate of Ballard High School and the University of Washington, as he shares his experiences from his time with NASA and the Apollo space program.

Defeating MalariaEvery two minutes, a child dies of malaria. And each year, more than 200 million new cases of the disease are reported. Although countries have dramatically reduced the total number of malaria cases and deaths since 2000, progress in recent years has stalled. Worryingly, in some countries, malaria is on the rise. Philip Welkhoff is the Director of the Malaria Program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Previously, he served as Director of Research at the Institute for Disease Modeling. There, he helped develop computer simulations of malaria, polio, and other disease transmission dynamics to assist public health professionals and other scientists in planning the eradication of different diseases. Philip will explain the scope of malaria’s deadly impact, the challenges in its elimination, and what is being done across the globe to eradicate the greatest killer of mankind. |

Cannabis: A Fast Growing Industry Investors and States are High OnIn the last five years, marijuana has been legalized in 33 states and has generated $750 million in revenue. The $10 billion legal marijuana industry is growing alongside the CBD industry, with each expected to be a $40 billion industry by 2030. Constellation, Altria, Scott’s Miracle Grow, the Pritzker family and more have invested. It seems everyone wants to ride the “high” tide of the market, but there are warning signs for companies. This week, JJ McKay will provide his insight on the legal marijuana and CBD industry. With a rich history in consumer appetites, JJ McKay has worked on programs with companies that include Costco and the American Heart Association. In 2016, McKay founded The Fresh Toast, a media content company and lifestyle & health platform with a side of cannabis. It is an award-winning digital leader for the industry. |

This event is brought to you by the Peace Builder Committee of Seattle #4 Rotary and Seattle City Rotaract. Both of these organizations have directly supported REST and are excited to see where our donations are going! Seattle #4 Rotary Peacebuilder Committee put forward a $500 Assistant Governor Grant to purchase red jackets for the social workers who do outreach to prostituted individuals on North Aurora. Seattle City Rotaract organized a drive to stock the REST Drop-In Center with feminine hygeine products. Please join us for a site visit of the REST Drop-In Center and a FAQ with Engagement Director Julie McNamara-Dahl. The REST Drop-In Center provides a safe space to rest, connect with other survivors, build a community of support, and get assistance in accessing resources like housing, employment, education, transportation, and our newly launched Integrated Health Clinic. The Drop-In Center is open four days a week, and guests have access to food, including a hot dinner served nightly, quiet and relaxing spaces, and the resource closet where they can pick up clothes, hygiene items, and other necessities. Rotarians and Rotaractors will be visiting the Drop-In Center on an evening when it's not serving survivors, a Friday night. Due to the tight quarters, the maximum head count for this event is 20. Each year the Rotary Community Service Committee, in conjunction with the Rotary Boys & Girls Club, creates a wonderful opportunity for all Rotarians and their friends and families to take a deserving, less-fortunate child on a holiday shopping outing. All of the children are from the Rotary Boys & Girls Club and are selected for the program on the basis of need. The idea is simple: on one day in December, volunteers who are willing to donate and spend their own money are paired with a child (typically ages 6-16) and accompany them on a 1-3 hour shopping excursion in downtown Seattle. Typical destinations are Macy’s, Old Navy, Nordstrom Rack, or other stores that may have what each particular child needs (within the $200 spending limit). Meeting at the Club at 19th and Spruce in South Capitol Hill, transportation is provided to and from the downtown shopping core. Many volunteers, who often bring members of their own family to participate, have included lunch with the child as well (no obligation, of course). This event is a wonderful way to help a child in need during the holidays. Our meeting/departure times will be between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. Vans from the club will depart approximately every 15-20 minutes from the club and will rotate between the club and our drop-off/pick-up point at or near the Convention Center. Our last pick-up from downtown back to the club will be at 3:00 pm. Please contact Joel Ferrell as soon as possible if you are able to join us this year. We have a limit of 40 pairings available and last year we had to establish a waitlist! Please provide a meeting time that works for you, any age/gender preference, as well as a cell phone number in case we need to contact you while you are shopping. |
