Following the success of our recent Peacebuilders Book Discussion of “So You Want to Talk About Race" by local author and activist Ijeoma Oluo, we’re excited to announce your Seattle 4 Rotary Peacebuilders Committee is continuing our journey towards antiracism. This February, please join us in reading “White Fragility” by local author and UW Professor Robin Diangelo. It’s a New York Times best-selling book, exploring how racism as a practice is not restricted to ‘bad people’ and the counterproductive reactions even the best-meaning people can have when their assumptions about race are challenged. Facilitating our book discussion will be Seattle Rotary's own Paula Houston. The discussion will be held at 11am before the luncheon on Wed. Feb. 26, either in the Motif hotel or at a nearby location (TBD). Your Peacebuilders Committee invites all Seattle 4 Rotary members to join us in this read and discussion. Copies of the book can be obtained at all the regular locations: |

While our in-person meetings are suspended due to the State of Emergency in Washington, our club leaders are hard at work finding ways for Seattle 4 Rotary to continue to provide quality programming and opportunities for connection for our members. We are excited to present an online program in lieu of our March 18th luncheon. This video will be released on our YouTube and Facebook pages at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, March 18th. Right now, at this moment, while all of our lives have turned upside down and inside out, it may seem impossible to look at something like the coronavirus pandemic and see anything but catastrophe. Yet, the human capacity to rise above, even in the most difficult of times, always has a way of shining through. We all face difficulties, not to be destroyed by them, but to help rediscover ourselves and extract the inner strength we are often unaware of having. During Wednesday’s virtual Rotary program, fellow Seattle 4 Rotarian, Rais Bhuiyan will share his experiences and inspiration as we navigate through this incredibly uncertain and frightening time together.
Shot by a white supremacist ten days after 9/11, Rais Bhuiyan not only survived this brutal hate crime, he went on to forgive his assailant and worked tirelessly to try and save him from death row. Rais later created the non-profit, World Without Hate (WWH), the manifestation of his death-bed promise, dedicating his life to disrupting hate and violence through storytelling and empathy education. To date, Rais has engaged with more than 250,000 people globally, from classrooms, college campuses, maximum-security prisons, refugee camps, religious forums, to town halls, city councils, and conferences. That doesn’t mean they are subservient or weak. It simply means they’re motivated by a genuine compassion for people. In other words, they care deeply about their employees and customers, and they act accordingly. Howard’s career in business spans more than 50 years, all in consumer-oriented businesses covering several industries. He retired from Starbucks Coffee after 21 years where he led both the domestic business, as President of North America, and was the founding President of Starbucks International. COVID-19 is fast becoming a perfect storm for worsening the opioid epidemic. People in recovery are often finding their support groups canceled and treatment providers limiting or stopping services. At the same time, those in active addiction may find it difficult to acquire their usual supply of drugs due to the pandemic, throwing them into dangerous withdrawals. Our homeless population now faces even more challenges to treatment and recovery. On June 17, we will hear how Ideal Option, a national leader in office-based, medication-assisted treatment for addiction, seeks to help stem the tide of addiction in downtown Seattle and throughout King County. Dr. Jeff Allgaier, a University of Washington graduate and co-founder of Ideal Option, will share Ideal Option’s plans to offer low-barrier, innovative programs and tools to every demographic in Seattle. He will also provide a compelling look into how Ideal Option is currently making a difference in other cities and counties. Today, Ideal Option operates 72 clinics in 9 states, including 31 in Washington State. Ideal Option collaborates with existing stakeholders and providers to improve the continuum of care. This includes partnerships with emergency rooms and jail systems as well as numerous support agencies and programs addressing housing, mental health, and nutrition support among others. |

Cross-cultural conflict commonly exists across cultures not only because People of Color (PoC) have different experiences from White people, our experiences shape our reality, leading to our diverse perspectives on race, racism, and race relations. These differences lead to the inability to have effective conversations that could lead to our collective ability to dismantle our nation's legacy of institutional and systemic racism. There is a saying by an unknown author, “The process is the first part of the product”. In order to address institutional and systemic racism, we must first learn how to talk about it. In this thought-provoking presentation, Dr. Hollins will make clear why we struggle to have effective conversations about racism and provide participants with an effective way to move the race conversation forward. Caprice D. Hollins, Psy.D. is co-founder of Cultures Connecting, which provides culturally relevant professional development and support to organizations committed to improving their ability to work effectively across cultures. |
